Don, I'd get a new mixer. It should never smoke. Internal overheat circuits should turn it off first. Smoke means something got cooked in there.
Under warranty, I'd get another one.
I'll give Kitchen-aid a call, thanks. The instructions did say that it can overheat and it would shut off and could stay off for as long as 30 minutes before it cooled enough to be restarted.
