Sounds like wherever they are, the registration is handled by a private company (and you thought government DMVs are incompetent?) and someone messed up and registered the truck really light.
In Virginia,, the car sales dealership can type up whatever they want on the paperwork going to the DMV.
My first "ton" truck was a '78 Ford F350 that had a 10' flatbed that could haul 2 cords of oak firewood.
The truck was tagged for 6500 pounds gross,, heck, I could put 10,000 pounds of wood on the truck.
That truck empty weighed over 7,000 pounds.
It turns out that the dealer simply moved the tags over from the Ford Courier that I traded in.
The Courier had been tagged for 6,500 pounds,,,
Luckily, I was never stopped. That was back in the early 1980's,, times were different, then,,, :laughing:
