LD is exactly right, most fees and permits are just another way for governmental agencies to extract more money out of the public.

Maybe in farm country it would have been OK (or less bad?) with a tractor but he's within the urban boundary of or Nation's Capital. There's actually a Police Station right there just out of the picture! A couple grand in fines/fees -- the guy should consider himself lucky. It's not about raking in money, it's about educating people that are too stupid to figure things out on their own. Ignorance doesn't absolve you from obeying the laws.

It is probably a little both but it does seem that warnings for simple oversight infractions are a thing of the past, they seem to go right to issuing a ticket.

I had a cop stop me and at the very beginning he told me that the conversation was being recorded on his lapel. Then he told me I crossed the centerline and asked me if I was drinking. I told him no, I went up to the centerline on a curve but did not cross it and if he wanted to have me take a breathalyzer test I would be happy to. A few minutes later he was telling me that I could go at which time I asked about crossing the centerline. He said he didn't really see me cross it but I was close. I told him the conversation was being recorded of his lapel and he had said that I crossed it. He was really backpedaling at that point and I told him "thank you and next time you should tell the truth".

I think there is more fabrication and blatant "revenue generation" than people think.

I thought he got a police escort? Have y'all watched any of the accident videos from Russia, India, and SE Asia?! I'm ok with needing a permit...

He got that after paying for the permit and then paying extra for the escort. :) However, the way the story is written, it looks like he had a permit, but failed to follow through with the requirements of that permit such as getting the police escort, tying down the load properly, flags, etc., so he deserved the fines.

Fees and fines are fast becoming revenue sources built into operating budgets.

For some it is simply a cost of doing business as to how far it has come... especially with deliveries in the city.

I do see many that seem to skirt the towing requirements... they get away with it by staying off freeways and avoiding weigh stations.

One local contractor tows a tagged 22k bumper pull with a older F250 and has done so for years... actually had the trailer built for the weight needed... none of his guys have commercial licenses and all that goes with it and the trucks are not rated to pull that weight.

Will try to get a picture the next time I see the rig.

And it is SO UNSAFE that he has done it for years with NO incidents.

What trucks are "rated to pull" or haul is a performance rating, NOT a SAFETY rating.
MOST vehicles can pull or haul much more then they are rated for just not at the performance levels of one pulling or hauling nothing.

Stupid people doing stupid things is what causes accidents.
The "common sense of yesteryear is not so common anymore.

What part of this isn't for the money?

I'm not so sure about your "not a safety rating" assertion. Of course vehicles can pull more than rated weight limits but that is because the rated limits have a built in safety factor buffer. A 1500 lb rated axle won't break at 1501lbs or even 2000lbs but the safety margin is narrower especially when dynamic forces are considered. And, it isn't always stupid people who cause catastrophic accidents. An overloaded trailer pulled by a sober alert driver hitting a pothole at 60mph and breaking an axle or causing loss of control can just as easily cause a fatality as a drunk yahoo.

If those straps are only two of them running over the air compressor in an 'X' be aware that is not a very stable tie-down method. I've had problems before with tall items like that. The 'X' straps don't really prevent the item from tipping over. Better method is to run 4 straps and hook them each somewhere near the top of the item. That way it is a solid connection when the item tries to tip one way or the other, pulling tension within a strap versus just moving freely under the 'X' straps. I know, it seems like the 'X' would be fool-proof but it ain't.

If you are actually using 4 straps and I just can't see it then never mind...

Rob

P.S. You're missing a wheel...

There's 4 using a central mounting point, I've moved a lot of shop and machining equipment. Also gotten a lot of good deals on damaged machines due to people not understanding the concept of how to secure equipment.

The picture was more due to it being a single axle trailer at the moment :)
