Hi Guys,

I drained all the coolant on my Deere 455 tonight. Unfortunately, the metal coolant drain plug bolt on the engine has been lost. Spent hours looking for it and can't find it. It is 17 mm bolt that bolted right onto the engine block. I am wondering if you might be able to make a suggestion on what I should do.

I called my local John Deere dealer and they told me the original bolt is part # : John Deere M112792. Cost is $30. A little rich for a simple metal bolt I think.

Bolt Length: .690 inch including head

Thread width: .509 width of thread

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Mike

Your Deere dealer couldn't order one for you?

I guess it's a little cost prohibtive at $30. It's just a metal drain plug bolt.

The pic posted is for the diesel in the 455 ? Wasn't clear enough for me to match up to my 455 diesel engine..

Yes, it's out of the service manual for the 455.

The red arrow points to where the metal drain plug bolts onto the engine block.

The photos are of a genuine 17mm John Deere replacement. What should I do from here?

I called one of the very few dealers in the country that have it and they measured:

Looks like the Deere parts has some sort of thread sealant on it. You may want to put a sealing washer or a copper crush washer under the head of your bolt.

IF the thread width is .509, that is more that 1/2". 12mm is less than 1/2" and will not work. .509 is 12.93mm, just about the right size for a 13mm bolt. You also need the thread pitch. In any case good luck finding a 13 mm bolt. Sounds like a Deere Gotcha' moment.

Buy a petcock and put in it.

Do you know if a petcock has the correct thread size?

If not, won't work well.

You should be able to find a petcock with the correct size thread. My best guess it metric pipe thread, since it's called a plug and after looking at the pictures. Take your ruler and check out the hardware and auto parts stores.

Mike, You did check the container into which you drained the old antifreeze I hope? For that kind of price I would look harder for the original plug.

That plug sits directly behind the fuel filter unit, so suspect no extra room for a petcock.
I'd be getting one from the Deere dealer.. if were me and I was the one that lost it.. the price to pay :D

Cheaper than the goof-up my neighbor did.. changing oil in his Gator and after adding 1/2 qt of new oil, had a business emergency phone call that took over three hours. After several hours (50 miles driven) of use that the engine was started to falter and no power. Sputtered but would idle. Booked some free time to look into why, and then spied the full quart of oil on the bench that he'd forgotten to add.
Had to pony up for a new engine, when the fried one only had 50 hours on it.

Yes, I did look in the drain pain. No luck. If anyone has any advice I am all ears. Also, I updated my original post with photos of the original bolt.

Get a roller magnet and push it back and forth over the general area where you think it dropped...

Did you look in the socket you removed it with?
I have been known to lose hardware and then find it the next time I used that socket.
