Does Anybody Go Without Homeowners/Property Insurance?

For about 8 years I did snow removal for some 30 clients and had no commercial insurance.
I also never had a claim against me.
Perhaps it is since I am In Canada where folks don't sue at the drop of a dime.
OK,I did not get rich but I did supply a needed service which was appreciated by my clients.
Actually I never quoted a seasonal price but said that I'd bill based on how much work was involved during that winter.
I had no complaints and everybody fessed up come spring,Perhaps blessed but it worked for me.

What are the thoughts about an umbrella policy intended cover what other policies don't?

It only covers you for claim types that the base policy covers. It just increases the coverage amounts. I did have a $1,000,000 umbrella above the AgVantage and vehicle insurance. The cost was $240/yr. To get it I had to raise the vehicle coverage to the max of $300,000/$500,000/$100,000 which was not a lot of money. The AgVantage has $1,000,000 in liability. I left the base coverage at the max and did not renew the umbrella after a few years.

same here. You can't have the state min. 50K liability and have an umbrella policy. Your normal insurance coverage has to be increased.
Only thing umbrella covers are dollar amounts when the regular insurance limits max out

NONE, since 1975. Last time I got a quote (in the 90s) it was crazy expensive, as they itemized buildings and equipment. I have added considerable of both since.

I guess, there is worse things than loosing your stuff.

In US it's the medical insurance companies that sue property insurance companies with people forcibly stuck in the middle. Since Canada does not have medical insurance companies . . .well that would be why there are less lawsuits.

Can it be coverage from another company? Or for things the base coverage does not cover?

Mine was through Texas Farm Bureau who carries my ag policy and vehicles. I have not explored any other options but I can't see another company wanting to get involved by covering beyond my TFB coverage. If someone files a claim then the umbrella company would be at the mercy of the primary company to defend the claim in court. Of course for the right money any thing is possible.

My situation is I own a portion of family property with my brother and the company who insures that propery is different than my own.

Are you sure you can't join? I think if you or even a family member is ex-military you may be eligible? Have been a member for about 2 years and so far the only problem I've had with them was setting up an online account. They kept locking me out (their security is exceptional). The issue involved using a VPN and was quickly resolved after I called them. Don't know how good they are with claims since so far haven't had any.

Many of my friends are retired military and only use USAA

I tried to get Dad signed on because there was a window for non officers to sign up around year 2000... that changed.

Dad is a WWII Veteran and one of my friends said if Dad ever had a USAA policy I could sign up... so I provided his discharge papers and it was still a no go...

There are some related entities that are eligible... I think Secret Service or FBI???

It does kind of irk me that several times a year I now get offers/incentives to join but still do not qualify...
