I hauled a 28' sailboat mast in my 8' bed for over a 100 miles. Not an issue. I had the tailgate up and used a couple of 2 x 4's 12' long to support it over the tailgate. It had two straps on it.

Awe man! I had everyone else beat until this post lol.

I hauled x6 2x12x16 boards along with x24 2x8x8, box of joist hangers and 8 bags of quick Quick Crete in the bed of a 1999 F150 SuperCab with a 6ft bed.

I had the tailgate up and everything strapped down, it was an hour drive home.

Saw this today, rural ND.

What do you do when you need to haul 14ft boards, and only have a 6ft truck bed?

This guy passed me in the oncoming lane @ 70 mph. I had to hit the gas pretty hard to catch him again, just to see if what I saw was really what I saw.

Yup. It was.

That's an aluminum extension ladder btw, in case you can't tell from the pics (sorry for the dirty windshield - bugs).
We do this often, just need to strap it down properly and not exceed the capacity of the truck tie downs. Make sure you have a flag and you're good. Police only care if there is not a flag.

This just popped up on Hot Rod's FB page. I had to steal it and share here.

I'm thinking that the guy couldn't figure out how to strap on a short trailer. Um... strap cross-wise front to rear and rear to front: yeah, that would require getting down underneath, so perhaps it was more about being just plain lazy (vs being plain stupid).

And that's a uhaul, they usually have over the tire straps for the front and pull down ties in the rear.

Saw a pickup strapped like that on a trailer recently.
