A buddy of mine was talking to me about a issue with his lawn tractor so I thought I would post the question.
He has a Husqvarna lawn tractor from Lowes (48" cut with a non pro Kohler motor).
When he cuts a bank that slopes one direction it stalls and dies. if he cuts the same bank the opponent way it is fine.
He has taken the tractor to the dealer and they replaced both the carb and the fuel pump. It still has the same problem. The dealer pretty much said they give up.

Anyway I mentioned the gas tank vent and he found a hose that connects from the neck of the tank and runs to either the airbag or the carb he believes (I don't have a photo). I told him to disconnect this line at the tank and see if it runs. he did and it ran perfect. Hooked it back up and found that fuel drains into the line and that is when it chokes itself out.

We tried looking up the model parts diagram online and the funny thing is it did not even show the line nor the connection on the tank??? Go figure. Any idea what this line would be (Gas tank vent, some kind of carb vent perhaps) Without seeing it I can really guess as I know next to nothing about these mowers. Any thoughts on the proper repair???

He needs the mower and I am a bit of a ways away but think it would help if I can get it here and I take it apart to figure it out but would like to know if there is something he could do at his house to repair it.

Can you guys figure this one out???
THANKS

Newer compliant mowers have an internal venting system, so rather than a venting cap- vapors are vented into the carb. Fuel shouldn't be in the line- so the slope is too severe or the tank is overfilled and the line fills with fuel when it is on the downward side as you suspect. A wise man wouldn't probably tell you how to alter an emission devise on a public forum. If you feel the machine is being used as designed , contact Husqvarna first. It's called progress I guess. Remember the good old days when a venting cap was good enough?

the popping and rough engine run i also have and complained and it is brand new and the dealer didn't want to deal with it - blamed fuel - have used brand new fuel in 4 tanks and all the same issue. i am very p*ssed.

never buy another husqvarna again.

also use the fuel in 4 other machines here and no issues at all. so not a fuel issue.

Because Husqvarna made the engine which is the problem, right?

no they do not offer support for what they sell when it starts at about 3 hrs - that is as close to a brand new machine. WTF!!!!

THANKS - I am thinking it is also a venting issue. Think we are going to experiment with a vented cap and see if that helps clear up the problem. Kind of of pain to only be able to mow a hill in one direction......

Which specific model is it?

Not sure what model you're referring to, but I do not have that problem with mine. 2 years old, 16 (I believe) hrs on it.

I too, have the same problem with fuel starvation but mine happens on level ground. Have been researching and messing with this problem for two years now. Fuel tank is vented to the carb with non vent cap. First, it takes 15 or more seconds of cranking to get fuel to the carb after sitting several days. Once started, after 30 minutes of mowing, engine starts sputtering and dies. Fuel filter is empty. Raised seat and took fuel line off top of tank and heard air getting sucked into tank. Put fuel line back on and engine ran fine. Yesterday, mowing after replacing fuel pump, engine began sputtering after 30 minutes, while running, unscrewed fuel tank cap and engine recovered and ran fine. I'm going to remove vent line, plug it and drill a hole in the fuel tank cap. EPA crap on lawn equipment is nothing but a hindrance.

That is what I ended up mentioning to him - he did that and it works fine now. Seems to be a very poor design!

Not sure the tread on the gas cap but we were thinking a vented cap from a different machine would also work well.

I had the same issue and was sold a vented cap. this whole Husqvarna tractor experience has been BAD. Hardly goes backward, Slowly goes forward. It's a YTM54 or something like that and it's a POS compared to the Zero Turns I have. Sorry to offend but this is all true. Several shops have worked on it and it's still a Pooch.

I had one several years back for about a week. Snap a blade hub off, and then the tranny went out coming up the hill and I took off backwards. Fun ride....
Loaded it up and returned it to Lowes and bought a BX to mow with!
