67°F and no rain

Got the RO unit installed at the Cottage yesterday, not too bad. Filter portion went under the sink, the storage tank in my cubby hole under the stairs, and remotes the waste line to outside.

Be safe
Have a great day

Good Morning! 52F @ 9:30AM. Showers this morning, becoming a steady rain during the afternoon hours. High 56F. Winds SSE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 70%.

Lots of rain last week leading up to the weekend, and more rain last night and this morning, but oh my what a beautiful sunny day Friday and partly cloudy weather for the weekend. Just in time, too, because about two dozen folks showed up here to work on motorcycles, eat and drink too much, camp out, laugh, and enjoy each other's company. Sorted out some electrical issues, in fact it seemed that most of the work was electrical this year. A little tire work, too, but the two big mechanical projects canceled out at the last minute, and a third had wheel bearing problems on his trailer and didn't make it either. I was still running around like a headless chicken for the three days, first trying to get ready, then helping people find tools they needed, or parts, or doing little machining jobs for them. Almost without exception everyone was very gracious, giving back in good spirit and kindness all they had received and more.

Almost everyone headed out early Sunday morning after a yummy pancake breakfast (the waffle iron just wouldn't cooperate), and I had most of the cleanup done, when a fella from Reno shows up with a filthy bike and a tire for me to change. He was the exception, arriving late, and with little intention of doing his own work. He'd attend the first meeting two years ago, and sat on his butt all weekend watching others work on his bike for him. This time, though, I pointed and handed him an occasional wrench, and gave him a can of gunk to clean off his wheel before putting it on the tire machine. He ended up replacing a 14 year old tire with one half that age but with more tread, all the while boasting about his collection of classic cars and motorcycles. Both tires were hard and stiff, and needed a tube, which made changing them a real b1tch. As he rolled his sorry ***** back out the driveway I was very glad to see him on his way and only hope he forgets about ever returning.

Spent the rest of the afternoon finishing the cleanup, rearranging all the leftovers in the 'frige and freezer, and gathering up bottles and cans for recycling. My body shop neighbor dropped by with his son, and I gave him the 7x optivisor magnifier I'd ordered for him, with a 2x magnifier mounted for extra close work. "Hey, I can read a book with this" he exclaimed, evidently something he'd been missing as his smile was ear-to-ear, and all the reward I could ask for. His son went home with a bag of oranges and pastries, nearly as happy as his dad.

After a little more chat they left and I moved the trash can up to the road for collection, depositing a plastic garbage bag on top and not leaving enough room for the lid to close. I kept going up the road to take down the signs at the main highway that had helped some of the guys find the place (I had one complaint that there were no signs, but running back up there to check showed them to still be in place), and by the time I'd returned saw that something had already gotten into the plastic garbage bag and scattered trash all over. Obviously it was some kind of animal, but not a dog, as the bag was still on top of the trash can. From the tears it looked like it may have been a squirrel or jay bird; I'll never know. Got another trash bag to put the mess into, then put the ruptured bag into that. Put them both into the back of the truck and will deposit them into a dumpster next time I go into town.

So all-in-all a wonderful weekend that leaves me looking forward to next year, and also to next weekend when I'll be hanging out with the VW bus and BMW motorcycle folks for their camp out at a mountain lake. Be nice to just participate instead of facilitate for a change.

Hope everyone's week gets off to a great start!

You know it's Monday when:

Made a big batch of carrot cake muffins. Tasted good but a little different. I check the ingredient list. Left out carrots!:mur::duh:

That definitely qualifies as "different" Don, but it's also something I can easily see myself doing, too!:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Two days into road trip. From Oklahoma to Vermont about 1600 miles. Wife's with me on this one. Pretty uneventful so far with light traffic and good cool cloudy driving weather.
Really thinking about buying a farm or some type of home based self employment as the miles roll by. Don't know if a one man show can be self sustainable in today's society though.
Thoughts?

I love farming, but I'd hate to think I relied upon it for a living. It's hard enough for those born into it, for the rest of us there is usually an easier way to make a little money while still enjoying most of the benefits of that lifestyle. I must have been in my late forties when a wise old farmer gave me some advice on farming. He said it all depends upon how much money people want to loose.

To loose only a little, buy a little farm. To loose a whole lot more, buy a bigger farm.

If you have a good credit rating you could maybe buy a large farm and then lease lots of big machinery. Profit may still be elusive, but at least come Christmas you will get a greeting card from both bank manager and tractor dealer. :)

Seriously, follow your dreams Lenny. You are both smart and practical and by now have lots of useful experience. I'm sure you can find something you enjoy doing that doesn't take you away from home.

Farming -

New Person asking farmer - "How do you make a million dollars farming?"
Farmer - "Start with 2."

RNG, sounds like a busy but fun weekend..

Putting the trash out reminded me of something that happened last week. We have to take the trash can to the paved road, perhaps 1/2 mile away for pickup. Several neighbors take their cans down. Waste management comes by sometime in the afternoon and empties them. If they are empty when one of us is going out, we normally set the can back away from the paved road, perhaps 50 feet up the gravel road off to the side so it doesn't get blown over the bank... My daughter had set the can back on her way to town and on her way home, saw a delivery driver put something in the can.. she put the can in the car to bring it home and inside was an Amazon package (delivered by OnTrac, Amazon's own delivery service). The package was not for us but she brought it home with the can anyway to figure out what to do with it. The delivery driver showed up with her package and wanted the "wrong" one back... I had never heard of a delivery service leaving packages in trash cans.

Quite possibly, the intended recipient left special instruction.

He told my daughter he meant to leave hers in trash can but got it mixed up with next delivery, not on our road. The guy had trouble with English and addresses, not sure how he had a driver's license even.

Lenny and Eric. I know 2 successful cowboys, not farmers. They are relatives who started out with very little. They are real cowboys - cows, horses, trailers, trucks. They lease land and buy and sell cattle. Land in Texas is cheap to lease because then the owners can enjoy the tax benefits of agriculture exemptions, which amount to about 80% tax savings, and the cowboys have little overhead after the first year. The owner usually will usually pay for all capital improvement on the land fencing and cow pens for more deductions.

rain just pouring down, so much for going inland. 2 to 5 inches now predicted, up from one inch.
It had been coming down nice and slow and the ground was absorbing it. Not anymore, the lawn lakes are starting.
This too shall pass.

I worked in the garage this afternoon, put a trickle charger on the Jag and waxed the rear end of the car.
waited for break in weather and zipped down the lane in the golf cart to get the mail.
