Good morning! 70˚ partly cloudy heading to 84˚.
I found the Motherload of dewberries yesterday and picked all I needed without moving. I took a pic and sent it to my SIL and they will be coming to pick berries today. It will be like an easter egg hunt. Yesterday evening my wife said the yard needed mowing and we would mow it this morning but I knew the dew would be bad so I put the ZTR in high gear and did a record job before sunset - mow/weed-eat/blow in exactly 58 minutes. Then I made a cobbler to enjoy with our coffee/tea when they come later today. If we would have had more notice we could have made banana/vanilla ice-cream to go on top.

While typing this post a hummingbird crashed into the window next to me and was laying upside down shaking. . .
He just sat up and still looks in a daze. . .
Oh, he just took off, close call.

All of the metal cages I had put around my nut trees had blown over in the high winds, so I ordered hold downs which came in while I was away. That's what I'll be doing this morning, putting those deer cages back on and this time with holdowns on each side. Then....I have quite a few trees that need to be staked to keep them straight. That's easy, can make the stakes in the woodshop. The right string is the next step. The green stuff isn't strong enough; i've always seen pieces of rubber water hose cut up, the hose put around the tree and the string running through the hose. Any other good ideas?

76 in light sprinkles, I worked until all 24 nut trees were done, weeded, remulched and cages put back on. One style holdown worked great; other too small. Naturally I had way more of the too small ones...will reorder the larger ones. Smaller ones are like tent pegs. With sandy soil, i need to go down a ways to get some grip. Or hit a patch of clay.
Installed tree stakes on about a dozen trees that were tall, skinny and leaners; now they are pointing properly.
Buds showing on English Walnuts, American Hazelnuts and one fig. Pecans still asleep. I'm guessing next week for them.

Chuckled at the irony of the one variety of pecan out of five I planted turns out to be undesirable for Coastal NC in the NC State Pecan Manual due to susceptibility to scale or some mold. And what do you think the name of this undesirable pecan is???

solution is more spraying. I also learned I have to spray these things every two weeks. Sure hope my fruit tree spray will work on nut trees. Going to investigate that and read a lot of labels. Bought a new respirator for this year; going to use it a lot.
