Mahindra 3540 4WD, FEL, 65B Backhoe
Hello all,

I am in the process of looking at trading in my 2013 Mahindra 4025. Just my luck, I bought the only model not built to accept a backhoe. I'm looking at the 3540, and the 4540. Both in 4WD, with FEL and backhoe as a package deal. The salesman basically has been quoting me MSRP price on the new tractor and attachments, and is thinking only around 12-13K for my trade in. My tractor only has 66 hrs on it. Still in very good shape. So I have 2 questions. 1st, is Mahindra pretty firm on their MSRP price? I am only used to car dealers where they can come down quite a bit. 2nd, does the trade in seem a bit low for the hours on my tractor? He comes out tomorrow to actually look at it, but still seems like a pretty low ball park on his part. The old one also has the FEL on it.

Any input would be most appreciated!

I also posted this in the Mahindra forum. Not sure how to move it, or delete it. Sorry admins....

It's probably more of a dealer issue. Maybe you'd be better off selling your current machine yourself. From what I've seen they hold their value. So much so that I gave up looking at used machines because it just didn't pay for me not to buy new for the very small difference in price considering the warranty and all.

I looked for 1 1/2 years for a good low hour used tractor. All the ones I saw were very close to new price so I bought a new Mahindra in 2004 for the asking price and had it for 10 years. Three years ago (2014) I decided to upgrade. This time I shopped around, got pricing at the local farm show where I could see all brands the same day.

As far as trading in price, I think you are usually better to sell yourself. I got several trade in prices from several dealers and ended up making 2K more money selling myself. Used tractors with low hours in my area are very hard if not impossible to find. Remember, the dealer has to make money on your trade in.

I went back to all the dealers I met at the show and offered to buy for cash to get a better deal and found LS was the only dealer who was willing to negotiate for a cash deal. Please note this may not be the same in all parts of the country but most all dealers seem to be firm on their price whether you paid cash or financed.

According to tractordata a 2009 4025 price was $13,325. Not sure if that was for 2 or 4WD but would guess 2WD with no loader. If that is true then your trade in price from the dealer seems very good for a 4 year old tractor.

Oddly enough, my openly has 2 prices, one for a cash deal, and one for a financed deal. Not sure I followed you George2615. You said a 2009 4025 price was $13k with no loader. Not sure what the hours on it were, but that is a 7-8 year old tractor with no more warranty. Mine is a 2013 with 2 years warranty left, and it has a loader with it and initial trade in estimate was 12-13K. Not sure how my offer is a good one as it's the same amount as your example but mine is 4 years newer. But, on the rest I can see your point, and I understand that they need to make money on the resale of it. I guess that is why I am asking for the info, as used ones, regardless of hours, seemed to hold their value very well. So I guess I figured mine, with only 66 hours would be something they would offer a bit more on.

That's exactly what I am doing, just going with a new one. I just hate having to go through the hassle of selling it myself as it will only delay me getting the new one. Last thing I want is 2 tractor payments. But... perhaps that is the price I will have to pay to get the old one gone quickly.

That was the price quoted in tractordata back in 2009 when it was new. They only listed price for that year. I didn't know the year of yours nor whether 2 or 4 WD. Please disregard my last paragraph. In fact, I can still edit the post so I'll remove it.

It is most certainly a dealer modality. If you have a mark-up of as much as 25%, isn't it human nature to want to get all of it if you're the dealer? Mahindra corporate doesn't give a rats tail what the dealer gets for their tractors. Mahindra already has it's money.

Suggest finding another dealer or another brand.
