Your log pile is looking good Andy  Adds up quick with nice 2 foot plus stumps like that. Will make some nice planks. I see you are starting to see some soft going. Skid trails here are still hard packed snow over ice. High of 15* the last three days keeps it good. Snowing now.

Your dozer looks good. Tracks get pretty tight on mine in that warm snow when it packs in the track chains and a pain cleaning the mud out before it freezes.

I hate when the snow tightens up the tracks then you get the loud banging when the sprocket teeth jump the chain.

I spent yesterday afternoon making a skid path to get to a large maple that came down from erosion on the edge of a small stream bank . I had to winch it up a steep embankment to get it out. It took me all afternoon to get it up out of the hole it was in , the tractor got it about 3/4 up the hill with some creative use of my snatch block. I finally had to get the dozer and use the winch on that to finish the job. The log is about 24" at the but and solid all the way through , this one is not going in the firewood pile. I'm going to get some measurements tomorrow and see about how many bf are in it.

Dozer to the rescue. They are nice to have. Pretty steep bank. What gave up on the tractor that you couldn't get it up ? Did the clutch slip or was it that you couldn't keep the tractor planted and it moved more than the log ? Are you going to have your saw man mill that into lumber when he does the hemlock ??

The clutch on the tractor winch was starting to slip , I measured the log it was 22" x 26" at the base and 40' long. I Will probably have it sawed with the hemlock .

That's about a ton and a half log, so probably a pretty hard pull uphill flat on the ground.

Somebody on here said that 17% moisture is the highest BTU output - wouldn't the dryer the better be the case for wood? Any moisture cool the flame temperature.
