We were supposed to get the ice storm but thankfully it went around us. We received maybe 1/8 inch of ice tops.

THANK YOU to all the contributors to this thread, even though it got a bit off course... I am now watching ePay for a deal on a genny and I now have a design on hooking up stuff to it! Live is good!

Day three with no power. Ran the generator for 10 hours yesterday. Fired it up early this morning to let our two refrigerators, two freezers, and the coffee pot run. We shut off anything we aren't using and the generator has been running like a champ. It powers our 220V water well just fine along with any lights (ours are low watt fluorescent or LED bulbs). Mine and my wife's computers have been on the hole time with a 32" LCD TV running in the evenings.

Late day 2 and on day 3 had issues once in a while with generator shutting down with no warning since last oil change. Wife called their 800 support phone number and got a helpful representative who, after she told him what was happening, said it was probably the low oil switch shutting down the engine. He was on line with her when she checked oil level and it was on the low end of the operating range on dip stick. He suggested topping off oil and if that did not solve problem try unhooking the wire to the low oil sensor. When I got home from work I changed oil making sure it was topped off. Generator ran for 30 min then shut off. Checked oil level and it was at low end of operating range. Topped off again and generator ran for 5 hours without a hitch when wife shut down for night. It's now start of Day 4. pulled dipstick and engine full of oil. I had hooked up the battery that came with the generator for first time when I changed the oil last night. It fired up the generator and the battery recharging light came on like it is suppose to. So far it's been running for 3 hours now with no problems. Couple things I learned yesterday is that there is an actual helpful person at the other end of their toll free support line, the low oil switch works, and my generator likes to run with a completely full oil reservoir. Next time I change oil I will fill crank case and start the engine, shut it down then top off the oil.

I would say that the oil level sensor is not very accurate. Mine shut down once. I checked the oil level and it was fairly high on the (angled) stick. I just put it back in without adding any oil and then restarted it. I expected it to shutdown again soon (testing if the oil level was "on the edge") but it never shutdown again. Its been 2 oil changes since and no shutdowns. The only trouble I ever had was after putting some no-name pure-gas in it, a month later the RPM was hunting a little. It has since healed. I really should peek into the carburetor bowl but since it runs fine now; it slips my mind. I have about 50 hours.

I paid $999 for mine, and still think it was a good deal at $999. I can't comprehend what's going on to have them selling for $649 & $499. Except some folks are getting a really good deal.

Late day 4. Linemen replaced our transformer and the power is back on! Generator ran for over 15 hours without a hitch today. Will use it this weekend until it runs out of gas. Once gas is used up will run on propane for a while to clean out the carburetor, then I'll change oil before putting it back in the shed. Total run time was about 40 hours for this storm. At first I was constantly using my Kill-A-Watt meter and my multimeter checking voltage and Hz but then I got to where I just checked it after starting. Something I have said I was going to do and never did was find an 80-200 gallon Propane tank to run this generator. That's been bumped up on my to do list. Have a couple 5 gallon tanks but it was faster to fill gas cans than take those little bottles to get filled or exchanged. I want a propane tank large enough to run the generator a few days but small enough that if the Coop can't get out here to fill it I can load up in the back of my pickup and take it to be filled. With the price of propane at the Coop now it would have cost me half as much to run the generator this week if I'd had a large propane tank.

When I changed oil last time, it was about 40 deg. and the genrator was suspended from my loader bucket. When oil started flowing out the fill tube I rocked the generator back and forth. A large air bubble came out the tube. So I'm thinking trapped air maybe stopping the crank case from filling all the way. That's why after first fill I'm going to start the engine then recheck the oil level.

I don't know if you have propane for the house supply or not... but if you do, you might consider what I did last year:

I had the LPG supplier tie into the propane line coming into the house and add an outlet with correct fittings so I could simply run my $649 generator right off of my main 250 gallon LPG tank. I also keep 6 of the smaller 20# bottles - just in case. The supply line from my main tank installed was about $100.

I wish a propane line could be ran to my power pole. The Propane tank is on the opposite side of the house and there are too many water lines and electrical cables under ground between the house and transfer switch on the pole to lay in a line.
