I took my mother to her eye doctor, ophthalmologist or whatever, yesterday. He told her the same thing my sister was told by another doctor last month and I was told by mine a couple months ago. If you have eye trouble of any kind there is a vitamin formula sold over the counter that can help you. They are sold by several different companies with different formulations under different brand names. Occuvite, PreserVision, etc..

According to this doctor, when he started practicing a little over ten years ago he would see one instance of 'wet' macular degeneration change to 'dry' (the bad kind) each week. Since they have been pushing these vitamins he sees that maybe once every couple months or so.

The vitamins should have AREDS 2 on the box. This is Age Related Eye Disease Study #2. According to the studies this doctor has read the researchers were surprised at the improvements shown during the study. The doctor that I go to is a retinologist or specialist in the retina. He has one nurse who does nothing but compile information for the various studies he participates in. She also mentioned that the researchers were surprised at the improvements and she quoted a 30% reduction in macular degeneration forming and if you have macular degeneration a 30% slowing in it's progression. Macular degeneration is hereditary and my mother has it. So my sisters and I are very interested in this.

This was the third doctor in the third different clinic to tell somebody in my family about this. The doctor yesterday mentioned that there are several different companies manufacturing these and the bottle should have the AREDS 2 on it. Manufacturer did not matter.

I know a lot of us are getting older and having vision problems so I thought I should mention this.

Thanks for posting this. My mother had macular degeneration, and I had no idea that it is hereditary.

And here's the formulation determined to work best after the AREDS 2 study:

500 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C
400 international units of vitamin E
25 mg zinc as zinc oxide
2 mg copper as cupric oxide
10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin

In looking over the various OTC medications, some require two or even four pills per day. Since this should be taken daily, it's important to take the number of pills per dose into account when figuring the cost...

The formulation I gave was quoted from this article:

It makes no mention of omega-3 with respect to AREDS 2.

Yeah that's odd. I read the article in your first link above ( For the Public: What the AREDS Means for You | National Eye Institute ) from the same website and it lists the supplements for AREDS and then the changes they made for those in AREDS2. That's where they show the addition of omega-3. I pasted below:

I just met a man involved in a trial for a drug injected into the eye in order to see if it helps restore some vision. He said he gets the shot every 30 days, and if not for the drug he could barely see. His eye doctor wanted him to eat some leafy greens, but due to his history of severe kidney stones, he must avoid oxalic acid.

Yep, I think I've had my share of eye problems:

10/13/2011, cataract surgery on the left eye.
11/15/2011, cataract surgery on the right eye.
12/30/2011, retina surgery on the left eye.
01/20/2012, retina surgery on the right eye.
12/08/2015, strabismus surgery on the right eye.

At the time of the first retina surgery, the specialist told me to use Bausch & Lomb PreserVision AREDS, so I did; 2 a day. On one of my follow-up visits a few years later, the (nurse?) gave me a flyer from another company and said one of their reps would be calling me. Sure enough a rep called and she wanted to sell me her brand of pills for a little more than double what I pay for the Bausch & Lomb PreserVision AREDS. So by then, Bausch & Lomb had come out with the AREDS 2. It didn't take a great deal of searching on the Internet to learn that the Bausch & Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2 is exactly the same formula as the high priced stuff that other company was selling. I've gotten lots of coupons for $2 off the Bausch & Lomb, but I buy mine at Sam's Club, which does not take coupons, but is cheaper than anywhere else even with the coupons.

I haven't looked at prices elsewhere lately, but I've been paying $29.98 for 180 AREDS 2 at Sam's Club, and of course I take 2 a day.

I have two family members getting the shot and it works. I just read of a man who has been sailing for many years in the western Pacific who is also getting the shot.

My family members and I are also taking the AREDS-2 vitamins. A guy we know who was in the UK last year was taking AREDS-2 vitamins from a different brand from the UK so it is not just the US that is paying attention to the studies.

Just looking at what is in the AREDS-2 vitamin I think one could a vitamin mix to get the same levels that is in the single pill. I am not doing this but I have though about it because the brand I am buying are pretty expensive even from Costco.
