Sears probably could have owned the home center market (Home Depot, Lowes, Menards...) if they had made the investment in that business. Home Depot was only started in 1978; remember how strong Sears was in the 1970s.

True. Even if they had just focused on contractor tools and hardware and left the lumber and building materials to others. Part of the problem with that though is the mall based concept. If you could go to Sears in a mall or anything else across the street for a quick trip to grab hardware or a specific tool which would you choose?

Exactly, why would I want to fight mall traffic when I can hit up Lowes or Homedepot easily and without stress. Malls, blech.

I think I'll be replacing my ailing Craftsman ratchet with one of these. For $5 more I can get sockets too. Extra is always a good thing. The Craftsman ratchet has been replaced twice under warranty and the tooth count is kinda high.

Sears weren't just in malls back then. My sister was hired by local small town Sears store to be their bookkeeper, when she was in high school. She kept the job thru college. They were mostly catalog store, kept a small stock, delivered and installed appliances.

Hmmm... every Sears in every mall I've been to has had the tool department on one end of the store and I can always get a parking spot closer than at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc... I never have to go inside the mall.

All of them here have their own entrance too but the roads they are on are high traffic. There's enough Home Depots in my area that I can pick one with no traffic. Some roads I hate to traverse, especially around the holidays. 3 lanes of bumper to bumper is not what I call fun.

I hear you 20 minutes in traffic to go the last two miles and get to a parking spot is no fun.

We are lucky in that there are a three Lowe's in the area. Two of them are NOT near the mall! We also have two Menard's. One is NOT near the mall, but it is a small store with no lumber yard. Home Depot is also near the main shopping district with lots of seasonal traffic, but still some back ways in and out.

Regardless, pick any one of those stores and if you need four of something, its pretty much guaranteed they'll only have three!

There's a seldom use entrance to our mall on the Sears end. I don't know why no one uses that entrance. Its off a state highway. The ones that do use it circle the mall and go to the crowded side. The Sears side parking lots are usually 1/3 of capacity even at Christmas time. If they'd just park at Sears and walk through to the mall it would be so much easier for most of them. Anyhow, I have been in the mall twice last year with my wife.... how many bath and body works survivors here? Can you ever have enough candles or air fresheners? :confused3:
