The Sears traditional catalog business was a low-tech (no-tech?) forerunner of today's online shopping. Millions of customers shopped from the Sears catalog.

If only Sears management had been able to see the future, they could have repurposed the catalog business as an extraordinary online enterprise.

With there catalog customer database they quickly could have become Amazon.

One large problem with Sears is the basically just rebrand things and jack up the price. We bought a refrigerator from them. It had a filter that needed to be changed every 6 months. Want the Kenmore filter? $50.00. Want to buy the Pur filter that was the exact same filter, but without the Kenmore label on it? $36.... for a TWO pack.

Kenmore took 5-6 days to deliver. Pur was sold on Amazon and with prime was there in 2 days, often overnight because I live reasonably close to a warehouse.

Craftsman tools used to have a lifetime warranty and you never needed to use it. Now you need to use it.

Do you happen to have the part number? I'm wondering if it's the same filter I just replaced in our refrigerator; $43.28 including sales tax.

Incidentally, I have Sears service contracts on a window unit A/C in the shop, the washer & dryer in the garage, and the refrigerator in the kitchen. The Sears employees who have been here have always been good, but twice some other contractor for Sears came and in both cases was absolutely worthless.

Many of those fridge filters are a scam -- I bet the appliance companies make a lot of money on them.

Since all Kenmore appliances are rebranded units made by other companies, you can always find the filters cheaper than from Sears. Amazon has the best price I have found on our fridge water filters, and I put them on auto-delivery every 4 months.

True but in the past the rebread most always came from a good quality supplier. So yea Sears marked it up a few bucks but I was happy to pay it thinking I was getting something passing Sears standards and Sears warranty backing it up.
Then maximum profit slowly creeped across all facets of retail and the great China manufacturing take over. Then presto buy buy quality at a affordable price and hello cheap China stuff in fancy packing.

The old Sear catalogs are fun to look through. I restored an old horse drawn buggy a few years ago that was originally bought from a Sears Catalog in 1897. It sold.....at that time.....for $21.95 and if wanted an optional brake or top.......you could get those for an additional $10. Neat little buggy......but....even back then.....buggies were made by others not Sears. Ours came out of Ohio....made by the Columbus Buggy Works but sold by Sears.
