Talk about primitive tools and a primitive work space. Can you imagine anything like that happening in the US today? The unions would be fit to be tied, that is if you could even find anyone who'd give it a try it in this country today. Not likely.

Oh, I admit the methods and workplace were very crude indeed, but the end result of the machined forging looked pretty good. But I had to admire the skill and teamwork of those fellas to accomplish their goal.

Oh, man, you are correct!. I can remember a visit to a steel plant in Kansas City back about 1970, and just walking by a billet of hot steel like that at about 40 or 50 feet and it felt like my clothing might catch fire.. When they opened up one of those gas fired ovens to get some steel out, even though I had a face shield and was probably 50 foot away, I was getting a bit worried. It was neat to watch the wire being drawn from the billets, and the making of staples, nails and woven wire. It impressed me quite a bit.
