Parked the machine about 3 weeks ago and all was good. Went out today just to start it and let it run a bit as the temperature had fallen to 15 F. I let the glow plugs warm up but all I heard was a click, the starter did not engage. I searched the forums but looking for specifics for my CK 2510. Any thoughts?

Put a volt meter across the battery terminals it should read 12 volts approx. Plug the block heater in if it has one. Use jumper cables.

Thanks GMIslander and southernAl, I'll give that a go and report back. No block heater but may need to consider same for next year, no warm shop to work in.

A quick check with a voltmeter directly on the battery post's (not the battery clamps) with the starter attempting to engage will be the best place to start. Of course make sure PTO if off, clutch pushed in, and/or in neutral. In other words, make sure it is not a safety switch problem easily corrected by moving a lever. But battery is possible, and also battery connections are always suspect. If the voltage stays up on the battery posts when start is attempted. (will need two people to do this test,) then move out to the battery connections, then to the other end of the battery cables (starter solenoid lug and ground bolt. Each time looking for a voltage drop. It voltage stays up, but starter solenoid does not pull in, find the connection coming from the starter relay and going to the starter solenoid. Is the starter solenoid coil energized? If not go upstream to the starter relay, and what energizes its coil. now you are dealing with possible safety switch issues and or computer issues if equipped. Let us know what you come up with.

I think the only safety switch in the starting circuit is the end switch on the clutch pedal linkage...make sure the switch button is fully depressed when the pedal is pushed, or jump the switch temporarily and try again, to eliminate the switch as the cause.

How old is your tractor? 2510 just came a few years ago if am not mistaken. This battery should be under warranty if that is the problem or any other should be under warranty just sayin.

I'm betting on the Omni-present "bad ground"

So far battery and connections up to the starter solenoid check out at just over 12 volts. No helper just now so can't do the other checks to see if there is a voltage drop when trying to start. K man, the tractor was bought new in August and has 52 hours. Was hoping it was something easy before calling dealer. All was good when I parked it. A couple weeks ago I started and let it run a bit so not sure what may have failed since then.

You need to find someone to crank while you measure or get some long clip leads.. Batteries can show 12 volts, but what do they show when a load is applied? That is the important measurement. If it falls much below 10 volts the starter solenoid may not pull up. I have seen batteries that easily measure 12 volts when idle, and as soon as even a moderate load is put on them, they drop to extremely low voltages. You can get an idea also if the battery is any good by turning on the headlights and observing them for a minute and see if you think they are the normal brightness for a non running charging system. And if so, do the lights go out when the key is turned to start? If not, then the problem is NOT likely the battery, but likely a safety switch or wiring issue.

Certainly a possibility. And easy way to measure that is a voltmeter between the negative terminal of the battery and the chassis of the tractor. while attempting to pull current. If a voltage is developed, that is NOT good. One way to pull current if you don't have a helper would be to turn on the headlights. Of course you can also just observe the headlights. If they seem normal brightness for a system not charging, then that alone is a good sign. If they appear dim or do not light, and the battery post voltage still measures near 12, then YES, a bad (corroded) ground or other connection is very likely.

Dickster you only have 52 hours it just broke in. This is why I say for it being that low in hours then any problem with the machine is under warranty. My CK 30 HST has only 54 hours and I bougth it back 2013 and never had any real issues yet but if I did I would calling the dealer to come out and look it over or fix it. That is why you have warranties and not only that if you touch it then they could use that against you just sayin. Be safe than sorry.

Great advice K man. I will be calling the dealer this week. I'll keep everyone posted.

Why don't you just remove the battery and take it to a parts store and have them check it?

You are welcome. Here in Ontario we do things different from the boys across the border. Our dealers take care of us at least mine has been very good to me and they have that reputation. Good luck

Have you checked the position of all the safety switches - go peddle, PTO lever, etc. Any one could just need a bump to clear the start. On my Bobcat I almost always need to tap the go peddle to get it to start. I also have a seat safety switch that cam unplugged once - took me forever to find it.

Hope this helps

Thanks powerscol, I tried all those things but no luck. Time to call dealer to look it over.

I contacted my dealer and he is going to check it out. I'll let everyone know what he finds. Might take a while though, he's a one man operation with a store front and sometimes has another mechanic come on side.
