Interested to hear how many hours you have on this 5420? I have heard of park pawl problems before, so I make darn sure I'm at a complete stop before I put it in Park to jump off the tractor.

I see your attachments now. Those are not the parts I found. I had checked that area when I searched for a poppet valve in the manual and that is the only one that came up. This part seems too thin to be part of any valving and the end of it is slotted like it slid on or into something. I'm beginning to think maybe some worker at the factory was having a bad day and tossed in some spare parts :duh:

There is a little over 3k hours on this machine. The guy operating it said when he placed it in park and released the clutch it jumped forward like it was still in gear and that is when it broke. I would definitely keep a close eye on your slack adjustments for your shifting cables if you have this machine.

I've also been told the cables for the P,F &R lever need to stay lubed and adjusted FWIW.

Good luck figuring out that part.

Another thing occurred to me. There is a bypass valve in the hydraulic filter head. I have never had one out - it is not replaceable. Deere only supplies complete filter head. Here is a diagram from tech manual. If valve is missing, it would allow unfiltered oil too be drawn past filter and into the pump.

Still no luck. John Deere hasn't come up with an answer either. I'm debating on whether just to put it back together but I would hate to find out later that it's something that needs replaced and have to tear it down again.

Finally got it figured out! There is a connection on the side of the transmission case that pipes to the mid mount scv that is actually a check valve. Pulled it off and sure enough the guts were gone out of it. It's number 12 in the diagram. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. View attachment 5420 cv.pdf

Going to be much trouble to replace the part?

Side question. How'd you end up in Palmer AK? What kind of work is up there?
