Rotary Cutter Agri Supply GR-1 Slip Clutch Adjustment

Yeah, see post#6. BushHog apparently doesn't believe in any such thing as variation depending on HP/torque. Probably because they just buy the shafts, clutches, and gearboxes from other manufacturers and then there is little (if any) subsequent communication between them. And BH doesn't care about protecting your tractor's PTO, only their implement.

The charts shown in this thread are definitely NOT universal. Each clutch design will have variations in the amount of friction bearing surface, how and where the spring force is applied, etc..

My BH286 has a B&P clutch. Maybe B&P has an actual chart for various spring lengths somewhere but I have never found one.

And BH doesn't care about protecting your tractor's PTO, only their implement.

Their specifications don't seem to support that:

MODEL
Bondioli & Pavesi or Binacchi
285 &286 1.10” (28 mm) 1.26” (32 mm)

EG/Comer
287/1287 1.13” (28.6 mm) 1.32” (33.6 mm)

Specs say 40hp tractor for the 286. One would tend to figure that a 40hp tractor's PTO hp to be somewhere around 32-34hp. On the linked chart above for 30hp (PTO) the spring length should be 28mm.

Shorter spring length, from what I'm gathering, for more HP. If anything, for my tractor at least, BH is not offering settings that would compromise the tractor's PTO.

If anything, looking to protect the equipment is in sync with looking to protect the tractor's PTO. Am I wrong here?

Those specifications (and greater detail) are something recent. My info is from about 6-8 years ago when I bought mine and e-mailed their tech support. My manual doesn't have a date, but has a little table that says:

MODEL SPRING LENGTH
285 &286 1-3/32” or 27.6 mm
287 1-1/8” or 28.5 mm

The file date is 2005. My assumption was that the specified length was based on the 90HP gearbox rating.

Thanks! I also have their parts manual if you need it.

I need to find out what vintage mine actually is:confused:

At any rate, I'll likely go with the 28mm adjustment on the clutch and just watch to see if it slips (tighten it up a bit if it does). That's going to be several months out as it's rainy season here now: tractor use is very limited.
