you can also drill and tap the tube for setscrews.

Yeah, you would think that those little pieces of metal are at least gold plated :) Another thing I think might work to secure the rod in the tubing would be to take a sharp pointed punch and place the tubing and rod on a good solid piece of steel and hit it with the sharp punch to "dimple" it together. I believe that would work as the tubing is just 1/16 inch thick.
