I use these , I built 6 of them, treated 2x4 galvanized lag bolts and an eye bolt on th the back of them that attaches to a short chain with a hook on my forks, they hold one face cord. I used an old roll of fence wire or concrete mesh on the outside

I am just thinking of bending over and picking the wood out of the bottom of the cages 10 years from now when I am not as able as i am now. Am I worrying about nothing?

Using the IBC totes makes it easy to get the split wood through the grid. If you have a piece of wood too large to fit through the grid it is easy to "hand it up" to a larger grid or to the top.

Joey, I think that for right now that is a way to deal with things, but at issue, for creamer (and I am also looking into the future on this as well), is doing this ten years from now. Arthritis lies around the corner (if not already here). And here, in my case, I have to consider how my wife is to deal with things: she doesn't have the strength to level up big chunks of wood like that.

I really like these types of discussions. I like to think that people can be better spared from unnecessary struggles by some of the tips that others have come up with.

Speaking of labor-saving ideas, here's something that I recently ran across (I've got a gas-powered hydraulic splitter, in which case this wouldn't really be of benefit):

If the IBC tote get too hard to reach the bottom as you get older, just cut off the top row on one or more sides. If you get even older, cut off another row. After cutting off two rows and you still have trouble, switch to oil or gas heat. :)

MY tractor time today was splitting a load of oak,

We love our 3 point splitter,

standard.jpg

It's fast, power full, and it easily pushes EVERYTHING through it's 4-way wedge, it makes short work of splitting,

standard.jpg

Then the splits go into half cord boxes to dry, as they are easy to move with my tractor,

Did I mention that we LOVE our 3 point splitter?? lol

I never noticed this before in all your pictures. You appear to role the rounds from the trailer directly onto the splitter and control the levers and splitting while standing on the trailer with the firewood piling up on the ground? Clever

Well, kind of... I park the splitter on a bit of an angle, so there's just enough room to stand along side it,

Then the BIG rounds can still be rolled right onto the beam and easily split... :)

When we cut over the trailer, I try to get all the biggins on the back of the wagon, so they come off easier,

BUT, sometimes you just get them on there any way you can! lol

There's not much "lifting" for your back to do, when you do it that way...
