Never heard of such a thing. Have a picture or part number? Doesn't it have a proof meter (combo tach, speed and hours)?

Appears there is a part no. RE17515 called a vacuum sensor noted in jdparts for the 2840.

I believe that the 2840 had a cable driven tachometer, and was driven by the camshaft (ref p/n T20071 for a pc pic)

thanks everybody ...

the local JD dealer said that is what it is (vacuum hour gauge) ...

it does have a mech tach which is connected and it does turn from the cam but the hour gauge is not working ...

i did find the vacuum port and it is now connected but a flat tire is keeping me from driving it at the moment ...

oops, your first post said hour meter... and for some reason my brain turned that into tachometer.

Well, i hooked it all back up, ran it for about 10 min and hour meter never moved ... bummer

It's an easy fix, get a simple electrical hour meter from any parts house and wire it in to the keyed side of switch or any area you like that has juice when running.

Does speed/hour meter show engine rpm's when engine is running?

Same question here. The proof meter (rpm, speed, hour meter) is driven with a cable. If the rpms are not registering then the hour meter won't work either. This indicates a bad/broken flex cable. If the rpm is working and hour meter isn't moving, there's a meter problem. I see replacement proof meters on Ebay all the time and pretty cheap.

Keep in mind that the hour meter in the proof meter is based on the engine running at PTO speed. So if you're just letting the tractor idle, the hour meter may run very slow or not at all. Increase engine rpm and see if the hour meter moves the tenths. That's tenths of an hour so it only moves every six minutes or more.

Sounds like the parts guy was pulling your leg. I hope he didn't sell you new muffler bearings too. :)

Or parts persons IQ is equivalent to a "box of rocks"

I was told about this but can you remove the hour meter from the cluster ?

ok ... i have driven the tractor for at least an hour but the tach never seemed to register RPM and the hour meter never moved, i did run the engine with the cable disconnected and it was spinning so it is connected to the cam ... so it sounds like the cluster is broke internally ...

so what is the vacuum hose for that comes directly off the manifold?

didn't get any muffler bearings and they were out of delco diesel spark plugs too ... ;)

This would mostly be if you just had hour meter failure and not an assy failure. You would leave the cluster alone and mount it somewhere else, but it sounds like you have more issues than just keeping track of hours. The assy, however can be sourced from aftermarket outlets. 1 example would be A&I (virtually any ag dealer can order from them, and all JD dealers) p/n A-AL30805, before freight would be approx $130. Good luck

Could this vacuum hose be the hose for the ether (starting fluid) starting aid?
