Even though we had it 'easy' compared to many other GI's, we still weren't 'home'. I spent 4 consecutive Christmases there, and got to my real home in MA once during the time I was there.

Yeah, we had it easy and I really respect all you guys that were over there in that warmer climate. Why I personally never got there, I don't know. EVERYONE I served with in Germany or in CONUS went there but me. All I can say is that I went where Uncle Sam told me to go, just like everyone else.

I pulled guard duty at the gate the last few weeks I was there... probably November of 1967. Got to Nam just before Tet in 68. We all had to pull KP duty at that mess hall way down the road. I remember one time having to scrape food out of old C ration cans so the mess hall could use the contents. Those cooks could not even fry an egg right. One of the worse mess halls food wise I ran into. We seldom ever ate there. I worked in the comm center and liked the busy times. I'd take over the most messed up area and clean up all the messages cascading over the floor. Must have done a good job, 'cuz they pulled me next door to work in the little comm unit that serviced the big tape operation.

The only real mess hall I saw in Nam was Da Nang which wasn't all that bad, then it was pretty much C rats except for Con Son and Tan My. Gotta say those puddle pirates did eat pretty well but Tan My was manned by "civilian contractors" the last time I was there in 73. I don't remember the chow being as good.

You probably spent too much time doing bad stuff so you got a lot of KP. I think I did KP all of once in my whole 7 years. That says I must have been a good boy.

Yeah, I was threatened with a court marshal once. When that didn't happen, the first shirt swore "Pilgrim, I'm going to get you." He never did, the CO saw to that.

We had to do Charge of Quarters and KP by roster.. never saw anyone put on it by pissing someone off. But I'm sure it happened. Think I had it twice in Basic at Little Korea, once or twice at school, and once or twice in Germany. When I first was stationed in Nam, I was on a Navy base and ate good, second tour there was no mess hall. We bought stuff from the PX by the case [ remember sterno cans ] when we got somewhere that had one, bought stuff local, or ate C rations. We had a roster for burning krap with diesel that everyone got to enjoy every so often.....
