Although there is no information on this type of bargain hunting I rather doubt the VW lawyers failed to take it into account. I wonder if there is a minimum time of ownership or ownership before the EPA news broke or something like that. Otherwise you could simply buy up a junker and get average retail price as of Sept 2015 plus $10K bonus. Seems unlikely.

On the other hand, if you need to pump water, you could acquire one of these "firesale" VW's and extract the diesel then use it to power your water pump or an old tractor (if it isn't too big).

(Where I live, a lot of water wells are now being drilled down to 600' so they can ensure they can actually pump water. My well is only drilled to 160' with the submersible pump set at 90'. When I first moved to NM, the water table was 8', now it's 30' and getting deeper. Ten years of drought doesn't help nor do the higher temperatures; it cooled down yesterday due to rain but the 4th we'll be back in the 100+ temperature range. Of course, I'm better off than Phoenix, AZ -110+. )

The major problem would be designing a governor to regulate throttle settings depending on the load. Without that...it is worthless.

Maybe not exactly worthless. If the hp produced at idle setting was sufficient to run the water pump then it would work. ?no? I rather doubt the max hp would be needed ever in such a setup.

Drive it through the transmission and use the cruise control to set the "pto speed".
