Buying my first tractor

I am pretty close to buying my first tractor. Just working out a few details and checking a few things before pulling the trigger. I am looking at a 2538 HST. The main purpose of my tractor will be for mowing with it(about 5+ acres, using it to remove snow in the winter, clearing brush, and for our garden. I'm sure in the future it will grow to more. My problem is I want the cab version but my wife does not like the extra price :laughing: . Any help convincing her would be great haha. The 2538 without the cab can take up to 1-2 months to get in. The Cab version I can get now, which is what I test drove. I really enjoy how quiet the tractor while driving and how everything is laid out. The cab will not fit in my garage though. About a ft short.

I if this is a good price. I am looking at $26.5k for without the cab and $32k with the cab after tax. That includes 5ft finish mower, 6ft tiller, and loader.

I also read some good reviews from the dealer, which is good. One from on here on the forums.

If you are allergic to stinging insects, a cab can literally save your life as many on here have had personal experience. Of course a cab stops Ultraviolet rays, so less chance of skin cancer. If you are prone to allergic reaction to pollen and other filth due to mowing, it can prevent lung problems.

So there, three VERY good medical reasons to get that cab. Not to mention just your air conditioned comfort in the summer and your heated comfort in the winter pushing snow....

MSRP for 2538 is $25,480.00 4wd HST. Cab is $32,910.00.

If you're gonna remove snow with a snow blower, I'd say a cab is a must have. Otherwise it will be like sitting in a blizzard and you'll freeze yer buns off. Tell the wife, no cab and she does the snow clearing but with a cab you'll do it. I'll bet that ends the argument right there, on the spot.

Thats the main reason why I am even buying a tractor. He only wanted his box blade and tractor(he is moving to GA where he will not need the items). Everything was well maintained/keep, even used the brush hog with my uncles tractor. Cuts pretty much anything i throw at it.

Our driveway is at least 1/4 mile long on top of a hill that is very windy. Two years ago when we got all that snow, I saw the seller using two skid-steers just to keep up with the driveway.

Hope I can convince her tonight :laughing: . If not I guess I will buy something used with a cab. Probably wont be Mahindra though.

Good news. I convinced my wife to let me buy the Cab version haha. I do have one more question. I am looking at 6ft finish mower(rear discharge). My property has a bunch of hills, can the tractor perform well up hills with the finish mower? Thanks in advance.

Oh ya I do live in the boonies and I love it. I have two dealers near me. Monroe Tractor and Beers Auto and Tag Inc.

It is rear mount pto. That was the first thing I researched when I bought our house.

If when going up a hill and the engine RPM starts to bog down, just back off of the hydrostat pedal until the engine speed stabilizes and comes up to where it needs to be, Then feed a little more ground speed to it until you are satisfied with the engine RPM. Soon this action will become totally automatic to you and you will not even think about it. It will become a totally automatic response utilizing the MMI. (Man Machine Interface).

A "RED CARPET" Dealer means they retail a lot of tractors but more importantly their service technicians are required to attend service training. :thumbsup:

Ask on the rear discharge finish mower, I have a friend who sells equipment and he does not like them if grass gets tall, said it kicks it out with no recut as side discharge does and does not spread it out as well. But then you can trim with either side but do ask others on their thoughts on this.

On the cab, no idea how old you are but if you last summer bought my first cab at 62. Man only thing that disappoints me is trying to keep it clean. I rather not have the cab on real pleasant days for the sun hitting it when 70 gets the cab hot with all open. I it will save your hearing, your eye sight due to trash thrown in them, keep you from getting sick in the cold, help you be safe in the cold for you are not bundled to where you can not turn..the list goes on and on... now the down side...you can not use some implements that you need to reach to control something on them unless you can stop the tractor get off and change the setting. So no spreader operated levels or sprayer with cab tractor...then still have the open platform tractor.
Do watch for limbs and such with the cab...would suggest you get insurance on it for such damage.

Thanks for the info. I wont be letting my grass grow too high should shouldn't have issues with discharge. I honestly have not seen any finish mower that is not rear discharge. That is including the green brand, woods, and a couple others. I have a few neighbors who use big finishing mowers to do their yards and they swear by it. I guess its just personal preference.

I decided on the cab because of the ccoollddd winters and hot/muggy summers. I will not use my tractor for anything that will require me to control it from the back. Just will need to lower/raise the 3-point and leave the pto on auto. My land has 1 patch of trees but on a hill and I could not really get to it with. Only issue I am going to have is the cab can not fit in my garage. I am either going to build a lean-to onto my house or a barn to put it in.

:applause: A PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection) only takes a 1/2 hour or so. Hopefully the dealer you chose gives new units some priority. :thumbsup:
