Ammunition

in my case, I use PT&G reamers.

Yep, Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge Chamber Reamers, Headspace Gauges, and Firearm Accessories Since 1957 - Pacific Tool and Gauge

... Dave has a lot of my money :)

The closest custom rifle shop to me was Spencer Barrels (of Clay Spencer fame) Spencer Rifle Barrels ... I'd go hang out there and be like a kid in a candy store ... he had all the toys (at least 7 lathes, some manual some CNC, several high end mills etc.) even made/designed his own button rifling rig that was pretty impressive (I think he was on the 3rd or 4th generation of it). He would get blanks and do all the rest ... even had a custom double stacked kiln to stress relieve the barrels, expensive air gauge etc.. I'm more of a cut rifling kind of guy but there is no denying the success Clay's button rifles (and other's) are having in the competition world. They certainly are faster to make. But if given a choice ... I'll take a cut one off a Pratt & Whitney machine any day of the week ;)

Clay retired and sold his shop to someone out West if memory serves me right. He even had a room full of swagers with people pulling the handles cranking out custom bullets too!

I've seen talk of saving old barrels and using liners but don't know anyone that does that kind of work. I'm sure the dudes at Military Surplus Collectors Forums would know if you're really set on it. The overall length of both cartridges (7.62x39 vs Grendel) is pretty close. Looks like there are some threads on weaponeer about what you want to do http://www.weaponeer.net/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6458

Barrels are relined, that's why they sell "liners". You are correct that I'm not a machinist, and I may use the wrong exact word...

No one really cares that you shot sub minute, or that you see others guns as inadequate. Also, no one is making you buy or own anything, so why does this bother you?

Correct, bbls have been relined , probably since there were bbls.

Look at the old vetterli conversions.broomhandles, etc.

Dont let one internet snob/bully get you riled up.

I would think it would be easier to start as a new build, but the tech is certainly in place either way.

OK we understand now, your the expert and we are all the dummies.. Got it.. I have also noticed you are not very friendly. Tell me I am wrong?

I just went out and for the heck of it fired my vetterli. Original a short 10mm based rimfire, converted to 6.5 carcano by pressing need.

In 1891 Italy switched over to a more modern, 6.5mm rifle we now know as the Carcano. The Vetterli rifles were shelved for a time until World War One began to strain Italian resources. In 1915 the old guns were dusted off and a conversion process began again. In the new Salerno-Method the barrels were drilled out and a sleeve of steel was fitted down them and soldered in place. This was then bored for the 6.5x52mm Carcano cartridge. Manufacturing new barrels would have been faster but this saved material, which was the bigger priority

Think I'm going to go shoot one of my bolo mausers, can't decide on the redman or broom closet relined bbl upper model. Hmmm.

It's more a thought, and I was trying to redirect the political stuff that we know will get a thread shut down. The 6.5mm Grendel interests me, I always thought if they made a half way point between .223/308 or 5.45/7.62. I always thought 7mm x 33mm would have been a awesome idea. The 6.5/.270/7mm have all the weight of .30 cal with less wind resistance.

So many guns, so little money....

There's "re-boring" and there's also "re-lining"... Both are done, depending on the situation...

I've probably had 20 bbls re-bored, if a good quality job is done, they make EXCELLENT bbls...

I saw something one time where they rebored a M91/30 to .45-70. Russians and Finns did 9.2x54r and 8.3x54r for moose.

There are guys re-boreing bbls every day, hundreds and hundreds of them every year...

I still have some of them...

How do they handle the rifling? How is the rifling done when rebored? Do they cut complete new rifling or do they try to go up so slightly in size that a small amount of rifling remains (.308 to .309/.311)

I recently got into the 300 Blackout and like it a lot too. It's ballistics are about same as .30-30 or 7.62x39 (it uses .308 bullets). I just cut up a bunch of 223 brass and reformed it to 300 blk. My latest challenge was getting subsonic loads to work in it even though it has a carbine length gas system. Been using the N.O.E 247gn cast bullets hi-tek coated so no leading and no gas checks needed. I've not pushed them very fast ... in working up the load fastest was around 1,300fps ... and I finally found 3 powders that got me in the 1,050fps range and still cycled the bolt.
