How much rust can under-body spray stop?

/ How much rust can under-body spray stop? #41
That's a new one.
Never heard that before.
My pickup is 25 years old, wife's car is 11 and my son's car is 13.
I spray them with used oil every year and none have any rust. (plenty of salt and calcium on our roads in the winter)
You are going to have a difficult time convincing me it doesn't work.
Good to hear another side. So if it does work, it just didn't for me. (I'm like that, & there's pro'ly a Murphy somewhere in my ancestry.) Admit I'm shy of letting 'dino' products into the environment tho', and that said, if I used petro oil I'd spring for 'new' vs used. :)yuck:) Some risk to rubber/plastics, but B&C oil after all? (50/50 w/kero to apply?)

I'm a Fluid Film fan. It costs about $65/yr to have each of our vehicles sprayed and they both look great underneath. 07 Silverado and 07 Civic. Both purchased used, but in very good condition. Wax body once in spring and once in fall. Car wash a couple times per month In the winter.

I think most car washes recycle the water. In some areas, like California, it's required by law. They filter the water and I think they use fresh water for final rinsing, but I think it's likely your local car wash does recycle.

X2...

This has been discussed here before, and relatively speaking, no, you don't have very salty roads there at all.

22.9 tons for Michigan! Yikes! Jon

That's almost 30 tons per lane mile per year!!! Almost unbelievable... A ploy by the labor unions to rust out all the cars so they stay employed?

I must be washing my 2007 Tundra pretty good in the winter. Body, rockers, etc looks nice. Some rust on undercarriage. It is driven daily locally, especially after/during snow fall going around snow blowing drives. It, trailer and tractor usually gets hosed off with warm water. Freeze dres, but its rinsed off.

And it still can be a problem not cleaning it. Although I think Detroit area covers for half that. They salt wwwayyy too much for what is needed

If there's a rust belt, Michigan is the belt buckle. Michigan is the heaviest user of road salt in the U.S.
Yes we have a heavy snow belt by lake mi

these newer autos have a better protection on them. urethane paints, galvanized metal factory, rustproofing in key areas. all these help to keep these newer autos rust free, not like 20 year old cars.

I think most cars have a warranty for rust that's at least 12 years or more.

Easier said then done.Head down to the local car wash on a salty road when its 10 degrees rinse your car off head back home on the same salty road.No win situation.LOL...

In an argument to that, It also seems that they are making both the frames and body out of many, many, smaller & thinner "parts" that can be cheaply pressed, all sandwitched together and spot welded, I think as a result of available robotic welding. All those seams just suck the moisture right in and whatever galv. might have been on the metal is ruined around the spot weld. There seems to be many more inacessable areas also that can't be inspected or cleaned/treated in modern vehicles. And don't get me started on that dang foam in body void's, that never ever dries out!
Currently I'm betting on Fluid Film and weekly, mostly underside washing. For $38 for a gal. can, and their $24 sprayer, a gallon of FF go's a long way. The vehicles I care about stay in the shed all winter:mad:

Luckily for me I can rinse them off at home with wood heated hot water. "Just throw another log on the fire." Jon

Wish I had that option.

You do realize how skewed that data is right?? Surely a man of your experience does.

Nope.

Look we all understand that if it snows in Missouri, you guys probably put salt on the road. The point is that is only happens once or twice a year for you. Up here in the rust belt we cake our vehicles in salt for 3-4 months of the year. It's brutal and if you haven't lived here, you probably don't really understand what we're talking about. This isn't to discredit your opinions on prevention, but, c'mon. It's not at all the same.
