My ford1710 pto does not turn when engaged but when it does turn you can easily stop it with your shoe. If the tractor is on an incline it will turn. Any ideas?

Did it just happen suddenly or did you notice a gradual degradation over time? Fluid levels and filter? Is it a live PTO?

As far as I know it's live. I bought it knowing it had a problem problem but it just stop rotating all together. If the tractor goes up hill and I engage it, it will turn with no load. Minimum load will stop it.

I would start by checking the hyd fluid and the filter. Without looking in the manual there may be two filters. If you recently purchased it a service/shop manual is going to be a must.

OK , thanks I know the fluid is up to level but I have not replaced the filter. I'm going to drain it and do a complete hydraulic change. Everything has been changed except the hydraulic ( I happen to have all manuals I will check for type and qty) thanks again.

Hi folks,
Wanted to give you all an update on the pto. I checked the hydraulic level before starting and it was on the money and clear. I had to use the loader to unload a new picnic table and noticed the loader was a bit slow and jerking slightly, I began to have doubts if I had read the dipstick wrong so I stopped it to check again. What I found was water in the mix. You guys were right filter is plugged up and I have water in my hydraulics. How does water get in there? I cover the entire tractor with a huge silver tarp. How much fluid will it take with a filter change?
Any help is appreciated.

Great, thanks. I would like to know how to avoid water contamination. The only thing I can think off is to reseal all panels. Thanks again.

Shifter boots are the usual suspect.

Dump some seafoam transtune in it and run before draining. Drain, change filter, add oil and more transtune.

Update on the pto issue,
I drained all three drains and poured out 5 gallons of what looked like coffee and creamer. Although I drained every drop and replaced the filter the new fluid still has some contamination. On a good note the pto started to work little by little untill I had it running all the time. I think the pressure increased and by the end of the day I popped a line to the loader bucket, but I'm happy. I Dumped 1/3 of sea foam trans tune in and will change fluid and filter again also ordered new boots.
Thanks every one.

Hi folks,
Update on the "no start". I traced the wiring as advised I get voltage all the way but when I turn the key, I loose voltage. I can only think its the actual switch. Now I have to find a replacement.
As for the pto, hydraulic is clear and levels are good but when I lift the lever to engage after running the tractor and pto for a while it will not engage. I have to play with rpm, in and out clutch also I pull lever up and I feel a notch click and vibration then the pto shaft spins momentary and stops. I'm going to chain oil and filter again see if that helps.

yuor post is puzzeling.

you get voltage, but when you turnt he key you loose it??

should be NO voltage before you turn the key, then voltage afterwards.

maybee post back with some more description past the 13 words.

Hey Soundguy thanks for replying,
I think the switch is shorted out.
I only had a light with me so not sure of actual voltage. I agree I should only pass voltage when the key is turned but not what I saw. I see light at the switch pole when key is in the in position, once I turn it to cranck over light goes out. You can jump the solenoid all day long but no ignition switch although glow plug position and on position work.

i doubt you have a short. a short would show up as burnt wires or blown fuses.

You might have an open. the opposite of a short.

Untill you put some proper test equipment and procedures into this.. it will still be a puzzle.

I'm puzzled my self. I didn't see anything burnt but everything is very much weathered and old. I decided to rewire the entire engine circuit (wire casing brittle and cracked and too many twisted and taped splices). I will keep you posted.

Well, still don't know what caused it , but had to replace all wiring any way.
I sprayed the switch with contact cleaner and let it socket before connecting everything.
And it worked.

With the switch working I decided to give it a run with the flail mower but the pto only worked for a while then stopped. I changed the filter and oil again because it was a bit cloudy now clear and still nothing. This is driving me nuts.
Any one can tel me how the pto works? I thought it was just a gear you engage. The clutch and speed gears work great.
