Ammunition

I surmise that for some gun owners the best part of shooting is the re-loading part, like on a nice quiet evening making a plethora of re-loaded ammunition, it brings out the scientist in people. Then there's the thrill of using the cheap vs. expensive re-loading equipment, like Lee vs. Dillon or Mec vs. Hornady, Ford vs Chevy, or Edsel vs. Studebaker.

Well I can sure agree with you about the joy of reloading. It is like a hobby in its own right, and an enjoyable one at that. But I have used the cheap reloading equipment, and I have the expensive kind now (Dillon). And to be honest with you, I enjoy the expensive kind a lot more.

I think my cheapest current load is 38/357 using lead and range pickup cases

Yes that combo is hard to beat expense wise

Cheaper to shoot 38 than 22LR. Saving my 22 ammo until it becomes more available.

Its more $ to buy 22lr, than reload 30-06! ;)

So, I was having a conversation with another father about 2nd gun for our boys. Both have a shoot .22LR (my son uses a 10-22, with normally 3 rounds at a time in the mag); his son has a .22 LR bolt gun. Acedemy sells a CVA single shot brake barrel, with scope for $230. I comes in .223, .243, 7mm-08, and .44 Mag. So, my son is turning 10, his son is about 9.5, medium build for the age. How does a .44 Mag feel in a rifle? I have no other guns in any of these calibers, so matching calibers isn't any issue for me. He has .223 and .44 Mag already. The idea is something for some controlled accuracy shooting and enough to take small Florida deer at real life ranged (100 yards or less). Any thoughts, mostly on recoil of the above rounds.

Edit: i see there is also a .45-70 and a .35 Wheley. Maybe a 5.5 lbs gun in .45-70 for a 65 lbs boy? Kidding of coarse

if your real goal is for deer, then I'd go for the 243 or 7-08.

Yes.. 44mag will take deer at closer ranges and with good shots.. and yes.. 223 will take deer fine.. my stepfather and stepbrother all hunted with mini-14's for years.. but also all graduated to real guns for hunting too. ;)

The better performing cartridge gives you leeway for less than ideal shotplacement and wind/brush conditions.

I happen to have a break open in 7-08. good one and done gun for anything in florida.. with the caveat that if I'm hog hunting, I never take single shot weapons / never go without a backup pistol. The one time I break that rule slightly is muzzle loader , but then I have a 44 revolver or 2 on my hit, and a 50 cal rifle or 69 cal smoothbore as a main gun... hoping to NOT have to rely on the 44 revolvers. :)

Well, I was in Academy Sports today (Orange Park-Jacksonville area) and after handling the rather odd Yildiz. 410 single shot shot gun, I bought it. Sticker was $129.99. I went back and forth on this. I have a Ruger 10-22 I've had for a couple years I was going to give him, but wife pointed out at that age, kids dont want hand me downs. The problem was any
22LR (other than maybe a Marlin 60) would be major step down in quality and feel. The Ruger is right around 6.5-7 lbs with a wood stock, and right at the top limit for his weight right now. The Yildiz is a odd looking gun, very skinny and long, but the wood is nice, and the gun is amazing light. If they had the "CVA Trifecta" which is .22lr, .243, and .410 (or is it 20ga?) In stock, I would have gotten that. If they had a .223 single or bolt (if priced right) I might have got that way. I'll report back after he shots it some, we are giving it to him Saturday.

As a note; when did .410 become a self defense caliber? Seems they had a large amount of defense, critical, and zombie loads, but all sold out of standard velocity target and clay shot.... i got 50 rounds of hi brass #6;

Edit: they had 250 round Agulia (2 or 3 boxes) of .22lr, plenty of 100 rnd boxes of Remington for $7.99; and sold out as I waited, $3.99/50. They were pretty slim on 9mm para (no brass cased FMJ); but we'll stocked in .380 of all flavors, and had a nice stock of steel cased 9mm Mak.

The .410 became a "defense" round when the Taurus Judge and such huge revolvers became prevalent. Not that you can't shoot those round thru shotguns, because you can, but it is the proliferation of these huge handguns in .410/45colt that has caused the uptick in this kind of ammo.
