My other project I am working on is a conveyor belt.
I bought this conveyor last week . Its 13' long and 10" wide.
Was told it came from a rental place that rented it out to assist to move dirt from basements. I want to use it to load firewood into my truck.
My problem so far is I don't know what size motor I need to run it.
So far I released the belt tension so the roller has very little tension on it. It does turn freely but does turn by hand with a bit of effort.
I tried a 3450rpm .75hp with a small pulley but it just hummed.
Next I tried a 1/4 hp 1725 and it just hummed.
Then I tried a 1/2hp 1725 It turned the roller only if I assisted and then would stop after 4-5 turns of the roller. Remember the belt is not turning yet.

Each of the motors had a 2" pulley on the shaft .
Any suggestion!!
Not sure if it need a gas engine to run it or just a motor.
Some of the hay elevators I has seen run with a belt and pulley. Was thinking maybe I need a gear and chain once I get the power issue working.

All thoughts are welcome.

It looks like the belt drive roller is about 4" diameter? That would mean that the belt will move approximately 1 foot for each revolution of the roller. With a 1725 rpm motor and 100/1 reduction your belt would move about 17.5 ft/minute.

It definitely needs a reduction drive, if it was possible to run as depicted in photo 4 it would be running at nearly 9 fps and be more like a firewood launcher.

Was just thinking about a jack shaft. Off the motor with a 2 "(A) sprocket via chain to a 12" (B) sprocket. 12 " sprocket is jack shaft on the other end is a 2"(C) sprocket to the conveyor sprocket of 6"(D)

Math is [A x C] divided by (B x D) x motor speed.
2 x2 / 12 x 6 x 1725
4/ 72 x 1725
= 95rpm

What I could do was try a few pieces of firewood and then park the truck there Hopefully most will land in the truck.

6" roller aprox 19 " around the rolling edge

I did an image search on hay elevators and it looks like you need another stage of reduction added to your log conveyor.

At 95 rpm with that 19" roller your belt will still be running about 150 ft/min. That's way too fast. You want something around 30 ft/min.

Local farmers hay elevator Not sure of the motor rpm but has a 2.5 pulley to a 10" pulley jack shaft to a 1.5" sprocket to a 7" sprocket = 92 rpm at the last sprocket. His elevator is about 40 feet long and takes maybe 25 second for a bail of hay to travel

What's your budget? You can buy on ebay an electric motor with a built-in geared reduction to just about any outout rpm. I just got a used one for a hay elevator for about $75. Free shipping.

If low budget, go to a junk yard and look for gas motors from a lawnmower which was self propelled. The output shaft on these have a sprocket to chain drive your unit. A gas rototiller unit will work, too.

If you can get a 12v starter motor hooked up to it, you could run it off the trucks battery for a few minutes with a voltage controller off a golf cart.

Heck, why don't you just run it off the Branson? Get a hydraulic motor and spin it directly off of your outlets ?

Ok really new to me is chain size. I have #35, #40, #41 and #50 What is the recommended size?

#40 chain would be sufficient, but I dont like chain. At least for the first stage. I like belts for high speed stuff, chain for the lower speed.

Good ideas! What about belt speed with the outlets.

Depends on what Hydraulic motor you use, and what the flow on the tractor is.

I'd just forget all this and get a right angle gearbox. Then a chain from the gearbox to head-pulley shaft

I have two similar conveyors from a saw mill. Both used electric motors with a pulley reduction and then a gear box. My conveyors are 14ft and 18ft with 12in belts. When its daylite tomorrow, i will get the motor size and speed and try to determine the gear reduction. No use in trying to reinvent the wheel when you can build from a proven design.
