Need computer help

For some unknown reason my machine now displays yahoo search as the home page instead on msn. Something loaded it during the day when machine was idle. No matter what I've tried or done, it reverts back to yahoo. My internet options even list msn as home page but this d### yahoo overpowers it. I've looked & looked but have not found the solution. Virus scan, system restore, nothing short of taking the machine in to get cleaned.. Any ideas short of a sledge hammer?

If you have windows 10 ....... that is the default search because of an agreement that Microsoft has made with Yahoo. the other search engines are one click away. I got used to the situation rather than deleting.

What are you using for your browser if it is Internet Explorer. Go into IE, select tools, go down to internet options. On the screen that comes change the home page option to what you want it to me.

Sounds like maybe an auto update took place at some time.

In windows 10 it can be changed. I use microft edge and aol as my home page . The wife set it up ,so someone should chime in that knows how to change it.

Select More (…) on the address bar, then Settings.

Under Open with, select A specific page or pages.

Choose one of the default options or select Custom to enter the URL of another page you’d like to see each time you open the browser.

To save, select the plus button.

Should be an easy fix.......you can change your default browser easily. Depending on what your running.......just type in......"How to change my internet options in Windows 10 (or whatever your are using)". The easy instructions will come up. As for 10......Yahoo is not the default browser as mentioned above.

Sorry forgot to mention I'm running Windows 7 and do not have yahoo on my machine. I have no idea where it came from or why I can't kill it.

Come on guys, don't confuse the guy. Yahoo is not a browser, it's just a search engine like Google.

I've done that twice, it still comes up yahoo search!!!

I've even gone so far as to download "make msn your home page".... still comes up that frikin yahoo search!!

Had you been to any questionable sites that may have installed some malware? If you don't have it, download, install, and run https://www.malwarebytes.org/ free version. It may pick up something other virus detection may have missed.

Download Firefox and give it a try as your browser, I think you will like it.

I build a few web pages and IE is the most "ornery" browser out there. You have to write special code in the CSS style sheets and "head" of the code for web sites to work with IE while other browsers all work just fine on standard code. I only use IE to verify that a website will be veiwable on it if someone is using it as their browser.

My Yahoo uses Google for a search engine. I changed the search to DuckDuckGo. It does not track or keep records of where you have been.

Looks like you are not alone. I did a google search - yahoo hijacked my homepage - and a number of results were returned. I thing in common is a folder called Spigot.

As previously stated either download Firefox or Google Chrome for your browser if you cant figure out the IE issue.

Dang, forgot another important bit of info. I using Firefox for browser and Tbird for email.
I'm happy w/firefox and don't want to change browsers. Just kill yahoo search!

Look at your "installed Programs" listing. Sounds like when a program was installed or updated, another hidden program installed itself to use yahoo all the time. Some of the downloads, even from Cnet have attached or hidden programs that mess things up. I didn't write down the names, but once I removed those add-on programs, things got back to normal. Just like when you update JAVA, it suggests and checkmarks some browser changes, and if you don't catch it before updating, it changes your settings.

If you are using Firefox click on Tools, Options, Search and delete Yahoo from the search engine list. If Yahoo is not listed then you have a virus running that is redirecting all of your searches to something that appears to be Yahoo but probably isn't.
If you have one of the browser redirect viruses here is a fairly good write-up on getting rid of it.
