I agree 13.50 plus insurance an hour isn't that great but it beats the snot out of 7.50 and no insurance. The really good paying jobs near here are either in the medical fields,power company or TVA power pants which we are losing the coal plant. Not much here unless you want to travel.

The company gives raises pretty quickly when you get cdls. I make a litre more but I be been there the longest and have cdls, and do the landfill schooling, and mechanic work. I held in an got a company truck and phone too. Ive workers the 7.50 jobs till something better came along, took what I learned with me and moved up. If he didn't mean to work why put in an application and tie me up with the signing in.
C'mon $13.50 PLUS insurance WITH vacation time is darn good for a starting job in Iuka. That's almost $30K/year in a place where the MEDIAN Household income is only about $33K.

And just to point out, the county is 95% white and only a little more than 75% graduated from high school.

Oh gawd.. someone has hit some of my hot buttons - worthless young people. Not that it is all their fault - I think they are the result. Let's see, where to start. I'm 50 yrs old and did IT for over 20 years. Got bored and decided to get a college degree. Yes, I went to college in my late 40's for my first college degree. I choose community college first and then rolled over to university. I took classes part-time and worked while I went through college. I did not borrow a dime. To be honest, I did accept financial aid (Pell grant). While in college and university, I worked as a paid tutor at the community college in math and science. To see kids who could not add 23 + 6 without using either their fingers or a calculator stunned me. To hear the kids complain about how hard a course was (considering I took the same course and found it incredibly easy) also stunned me. I took a graduate level course and placed 2nd in the class. The difference? Many nights, I was still up at 2am studying. To meet kids at the university whose home was 100 miles away, they could have gone to their local university, but chose this one for a degree in art history, and were $40K in the hole with student loans stunned me. Honestly, I often think these kids are made stupid on purpose - easier to control dumb people. I once owned a game and hobby store. Every kid in the area wanted a job there. First test was if you could make change right then and there without a calculator or computer (customer buys $23.54 worth of stuff. customer gives you a $20 and a $10. What's their change?) Sadly, maybe 1 in 20 could do it. Worse, these will be the people taking care of us as we get older.

That is exactly what happened to the Dutch about 20 years ago. More people were on the dole than working.

It would be too easy. We (USA) are not far from that. We are now 13th in education.

It just kills me his former boss gave a good report but I think that was to get him a job before he had to fire him. I was so proud of my first paycheck as a teen. And always kept a job of some sort. Paid my way through school. Welding part time and running a scraper at the same landfill.

It doesn't pay to give bad recommendations now days. You get sued.
My first W2 wages was when I was 14. Prior to that I worked in gas stations for Dad. No pay just treats.
Never received an allowance growing up. If we wanted something we found a job from neighbors or collected pop bottles for the refund to pay for it. Shoveling snow, mowing grass or loading/unloading firewood.

When I was hiring and firing, I was told we could not give references at all, just to confirm their employment, position and dates they worked here.

We had one company who called for a reference for one of my former employees. I told them what our policy was but added, "Since it's in the public court records, I can tell you that she sued us for discrimination."

I got a very loud and sincere thank you.

The good news here is that young men can't get welfare too easily. The bad news is that they resort to crime. Can't say they have a lot of options, especially if they don't have family to help. MacDonalds and coffee shops hire University grads, so what hope does an uneducated guy have?

I used to hire casual labour but dare not do that anymore. You would be safer playing Russian Roulette nowadays. So now it hurts both the unemployed and me alike.

I heard someone tell a college kid "drop out after the first year and get a job at McDonalds. All the other kids will stay in college and graduate. When they can't find a job upon graduation, they will go to McDonalds and you will be their boss with 3 years of seniority."

I must say around here age is not a factor. There are tons of worthless people of all ages, and genders. I turn 34 this year and have worked at a real job since I was 14. The only time I have ever got anything from the govt was to pay for the birth of my kids. Me and my mom have a business together (handy man, caretaking, repair work, etc). We have hired and fired people of all ages. I have to say most of the young people that have worked for us were decent workers. The biggest problem was getting them to work, and making sure they didn't screw something up. It was usually older people (30s-50s), who had the same issues as the younger people, but they also never really got anything done at the job. We have had our business for 15 years now, and we have just decided to keep it small. We usually keep one person on full time, and know enough people we can normally grab a few if we need help with something. Finding good help is pretty much impossible.

Around here it is the older generation that gets things done - the baby boomers. There is one other class of hard working folks - young women say 25 to 35. Know several that go out and ride zero turn mowers all day plus weed eat. They are taking care of their children. NOT the welfare class of women that have babies to get another check.

Meaning when they were at work (usually late and wanting to leave early), they would work, they just didn't care enough about quality/craftsmanship. Seems nowadays that everybody wants a job, they just don't want to work! Me personally, I work 8-16 hours a day, everyday, I just want to get things done, but the list never stops growing.

There are very few that pass drug test, criminal background check, and driver license checks.. I have to do this for insurance purposes

I think the issues are much wider today. Yesterday I was thinking about why. Why are so many people around here, a sleepy apparently old fashioned country place, either high on or dealing in meth....and that includes middle aged folks too. Why is my neighbour with two young kids, rolling drunk (actually paralytic), whenever I see him. Why are people especially the younger generation so determined to blot out life so that they can't feel anything any more.
The answer I came up with is that they kind of know deep down that the good times for our culture are coming to an end. The wealth from the Anglo/US/European industrial revolution and the international power which came with it, is almost done. I reckon they think, why work, let's party 'cos it's going to end soon anyway. Not saying it's right, but I think that's why everything is turning to manure in our society and few people these days, seem to care very much about anything or anyone except themselves.

My 27 year old nephew is as hard a worker as you will ever find. He has learned, that he is an exception in his generation. He has a degree in construction management, and went to work out of college for a major commercial roofing company. After he was passed over for promotion for one of the managers kin even though he had much higher sales and reviews, he decided he had seen enough and struck out on his own. He started a siding company and has been growing it every month. He is doing quite well and will continue to grow if he can find enough reliable help. He recently had one employee that he had to pick up at the half way house and he had to be back in time for his AA meetings and drug testing no matter what (he is now back in jail after a failed drug test). Another employee had to be taken by the methadone clinic every morning prior to work (this one is still hanging in). He has learned that the physical part of work is easy compared to the management aspect, especially the H.R. part of the business. In spite of all of that, I just learned from my sister that he had won the bid on two large contracts that will keep him very busy for a while. Now if he can only keep his work force.

A friend has trouble hiring people for all the reasons above in technical positions. But he has had great success hiring Philipinos (sp?). They show up early, work hard and leave late after cleaning up their work area without being asked to. They listen to instructions and respond with "yes sir", "no sir". Remarkable!

An asian man I know put his daughter through medical school. They got her an apartment and car, and despite husband and wife working full time, went to the daughers place on the weekend and cleaned the place, and prepared meals for the week. They did not want the daughter spending time, not studying!

Is this what it takes to get ahead for young people? It seems a bit sad that there is no time left to enjoy life in the process.
