I'm really needing a few new ones :D

The cheap lightweight stuff like the WallyWorld sells are pretty pathetic

I have had some really good heavy ones usually I score them at flea mkts or stumble upon some closeout sale never paying more than $10 -$15 tops, but I have pretty much managed to wear most them all out and now they are headed to be shop rags.

I really cant see paying $50 apiece for a sweatshirt though like some places have. About half that price should be tops in my book.

Usually a good heavy sweatshirt layered over a couple of cotton cloth shirts add a vest or hoodie and is all I need to work in during most of colder seasons.

Any clues? :confused3:

I have good luck w/Fruit of Looms sweat shirts.

Go to the lost & found at your local YMCA and pick over what you find there before they take another 'load' out to be donated. :D

Stock up on towels & T-shirts while you're there. :) (not kidding)

btw, Don't sweatshirts get thicker after they've been shrunk in the dryer? (... haven't used one in 30+ yrs ...)

Don't know how you feel about 2nd hand/thrift stores (Salvation Army/Goodwill/consignment shops) but I have found some REALLY nice stuff in places like that for next to nothing. You never know what you'll find, people get rid of once or never worn things all the time.

Thomas that's what the Walmart has!

I dunno bro curious if they do offer the heavyweights? Maybe I'm just missing them.

Mostly the ones I had have names like Gilden heavy blend, Gilden Ultra, Santee heavyweight, Lee heavyweight. Lee ultra weight.

I had Milwaukee brand heated sweatshirt I ripped it 3 times in 3 weeks. They were good enough to replace it though.

Geez I haven't been to Goodwill

And my church does have a monthly clothing sale too

Thanks for those ideas.

As for sweatshirts getting thicker in the dryer I don't know but you got to wonder where all that stuff in the lint screen comes from!

Was curious if anyone knew of something like an online discount outlet store maybe.

Carhartt makes my favorite sweatshirts. I tend to pick one up at the end of winter for a very good price. I think $20 on sale at Atwoods. I like to the XXL so I can wear them over my lighter sweatshirts. I have never seen a sweatshirt as thick, or well built as the ones made by Carhartt.

Nice Eddie...and wow $20 would be a great price for Carhartt quality.

I know a lot of folks like sweatshirts, but I never cared for them at all. I don't like anything with a hoodie, and I don't care for anything that I have to pull over my head. I have always secretly wished that I could buy a zip up sweatshirt with a collar and no hoodie.

I don't care for pull over style on anything either Cruzer. Zip up fleece and sweat shirts is my go to outerwear in cold weather. You can find them if you look. My carhartt has a hood, thought about introducing it to a pair of scissors, but so far, can't bring myself to do it.

2X on Carhartt ... have a zip up quilted unit with a hood that I picked up at TSC for reasonable that has lasted quite a while now.

The hood - usually with a cap over top - comes in handy when it's really cold out.

For top quality heavy cotton sweatshirts, I get them from LL Bean. I like these since they come in Tall sizes too.
For an insulation layer, nothing will beat a polar fleece, tech type shirt. The last ones I found at JC Penny for cheap, and they are pretty thick. I usually get the 1/4 zip style with the collar. Here's one: St. John's Bay® Long Sleeve Quarter-Zip Fleece Jackets - JCPenney

Not wishing to change the subject matter here too much but I have to say one of the best pieces of outwear I have is a HH vest identical to this that came gratis thru a ski resort job...that vest is probably the lightest and toughest work item I use. It's decently warm for being so thin and dries superfast (not that it actually sucks up water anyhow). Its a 100% synthetic material. I've used it for winter work for several years now and its none the worse for wear either. A couple times I snagged it and thought for sure it ripped but it didn't.

Not like that first Milwaukee hoodie...all show and no go :D

Years back the farm store always sold those collarless style nylon jacket liners. They were wicked cheap too. Would get a couple of new ones every fall. Never often find them around anymore.

I usually save the fleeceies for best and don't wear them for work. I have a few from LL BEAN and some others.

I've use DHG sweatshirts for 10 years. They are pricey, $50. Worth every penny. Very, very durable. Very, very warm. Not talking about fleece sweatshirts here.

I buy very heavy ones from the local company that does our work shirt silk screening. The last ones were Champion brand and the ones we had before that were Kellsport. By far the thickest most rugged ones I have ever had. They just don't wear out. The Kellsport ones are almost 6 years old and still hanging in there. But..they were 50.00 ea.

I wear sweatshirts all the time - except middle of the summer. I have one Kellsport and its so darn heavy that it almost wears me out wearing it all day. They are DEFINITELY NOT the soft, fuzzy type. Its almost like its made of Kevlar and designed to be bullet proof.

Heavy Crewneck Sweatshirt - Sweatshirts USA by kellsport

Whew 18oz fabric definitely heavyweight very nice

I have two really heavy pull over hoodies (which really I'm not the biggest fan of that style I like the crew neck) but they must be that weight fabric. :D

I do have one Champion sweatshirt and that was nice too I'll need to look them up.

When I lived in Maine there was a Hanes outlet store so I looked and they are online too. 10 oz fabric now that's heavier than the cheap ones but I was leaning towards maybe 12oz. I don't know what wgt. the Santee are I have finally worn out but I'm betting they are heavier than 10 oz.

I appreciate all the leads and advice.
