Who rides motorcycles?

Ha, ha - SR - you can always tell somebody who has lived in AK. They always ride DOWN & OUT of AK. Lived in AK 20+ years myself.

The trip I made to Sturgis, during the rally, was w/out the wife. So next year we both went by car - not during the rally. It IS a small town - if you've seen main street you have seen the most of it.

Well - I must be a lot older & more brittle than some(Gem99ultra) - a 400-450 mile ride on my bike is about it for me. If I HAVE to go beyond that - its popping Tylenol & washing it down with Jack. I always travel the back roads, enjoy the scenery & avoid the freeways, like the plague. And on my new bike - 2015 BMW R1200R - I can actually hear the wind & the song birds.

Gave my '98 FXDL to my son last year. I still enjoy the sound of a Harley going past me under full power.

Don't feel bad oosik, I'm in my mid-70's. Gave my "Harley" (built out with 106 cid, 114 hp, S&S internals) to my son last year. Had to set it aside due to a heart attack & stroke; med's shut me down. I did have a couple of Gold Wings over the years though. Wanted a BMW 1200RT too - but never got around to owning one. Nice machines!

BTW, both of our Harley's were relatively quiet. SO's current Ultra Classic is bone stock. Mine, with the S&S stroker had Super Quiet Fat Cats... which were only mildly obnoxious. The older I get, the quieter I like things. But only about as quiet as my Kubota

I haven't read much of this thread, but I've OWNED a 250cc Zundapp, a 305cc Yamaha, a 400cc Honda, a 650cc Honda Silverwing, a 1200cc Honda Goldwing Aspencade, and an 800cc BMW R80RT. And at one time or another I've ridden a couple of Harleys, a Triumph, a BSA, a Suzuki, and even an Allstate (yep, as Kyle mentioned, even Sears used to sell motorcycles).

I added JC Whitney crash bars, windshield, and saddle bags to the Yamaha in 1968 to ride to and from work downtown Dallas. I could park close and free, while it cost me to park a car a couple of blocks away.

I had a trailer to tow behind the '85 Aspencade, made a couple of trips from Dallas to Port Aransas, then rode it with the trailer to the 10 week FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA, in '86, and made weekend trips into New Jersey and Pennsylvania as well as around Washington, DC and Virginia. My wife flew up for the graduation and rode home with me (with an overnight stop in WV to visit her parents), but she never shared my enthusiasm for motorcycles.

In '88, I rode the BMW to Colorado Springs to visit former neighbors, then rode it up Pike's Peak the morning I came home.

I quit motorcycling in '89 when I retired and we became fulltime RVers for 6 years. I don't expect to ride bikes anymore, but I did have to stop and look at the new Indian motorcycles at the Denton dealer's yesterday. They are sure beauties. And he had a Ural with sidecar (3,100 miles on it) that looked like it ought to be more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Laying on a beach is pretty boring, if somone made noise & excitement for a minute and then the beach went back to quiet I'd call that the best beach day ever.

Here are a couple pics from a 24 hour race I did 2 weeks ago.

I'm going to take the light off the bike and mount it to my ROPS on my tractor for the winter, it should come in handy for snow plowing!

I like pumpkins. I will have one some day. I quit racing regularly years ago, I do an occasional observed trials comp or a hare scramble, but I mostly just trail ride now.

I've been looking for a good used trials bike to get started on. I put a wanted ad on Craigslist but haven't had much luck. Trials riding looks like fun.

Have you ever tried the flea market in AdvRider.com? There are a lot of bikes in there. I think I've seen some trials bikes there.

I see trials bikes on CL, there's one there now....but I'm in the mid west... I had a Kawasaki trials many years ago, it was a lot of fun.

Thanks, Kyle. Barley was diagnosed with lymphoma in January. He went thru chemo and in July we attended the BMW Rally in Montana where he was able to see all his old friends again. He came out of remission this month, and the vet is saying a month or two. Heartbreaking for sure, and yet he has lived a life other dogs can't even dream about! 55k sidecar miles under his collar. He swam in two oceans and all the Great Lakes, hunted frogs in all the great American rivers and several smaller ones, peed two miles up in the Rockies, made people smile in 33 states and 6 Canadian provinces. He will leave behind a legacy of joy and love. We'll spend the time he has left visiting his favorite local places and people.
