Planes have already hit drones and thus far damage has been inconsequential.Jet engines have trouble with birds. I'd think the metal parts on a drone would be at least as bad but most likely worse. Also, another concern is windscreen breakage and taking out the pilot.
The issue is that while jet engine manufacturers have extensive bird strike tests, they don't have drone strike tests. The bird tests are for birds weighing 4-8 lbs: Code of Federal Regulations - Bird Ingestion
Birds fly higher, faster, can be substantially heavier, and fly in flocks.
