Jet engines have trouble with birds. I'd think the metal parts on a drone would be at least as bad but most likely worse. Also, another concern is windscreen breakage and taking out the pilot.

Planes have already hit drones and thus far damage has been inconsequential.

The issue is that while jet engine manufacturers have extensive bird strike tests, they don't have drone strike tests. The bird tests are for birds weighing 4-8 lbs: Code of Federal Regulations - Bird Ingestion

Birds fly higher, faster, can be substantially heavier, and fly in flocks.

When I worked at the airport I saw several nasty bird strikes. The worst was a Mitsubishi MU-2 similar to this...

A goose went through the co-pilot side windshield, clear through the wood partition behind the co-pilot seat and hit a female passenger sitting in the back of the plane. It hit her in the face. They lost cabin pressure immediately. The pilot had great sense and got it down under 10,000 quick and made an emergency landing in South Bend. They had to take the passenger to the hospital. BAD! I felt really sorry for her. There was no co-pilot or he probably would have been dead. The pilot was quite shook up. Glass shards, blood and feathers everywhere. Blood from the lady, too. Just nasty!

Speaking of those MU-2's, some poor guy was guiding one of those to a parking location at an airport not too far from here. After it stopped, the pilot motioned the guy to come up to the pilots window.... the pilot slipped the brakes and the guy got propped. Just awful....

There is a fair amount of ignorance displayed here about UAVs, their benefits, capabilities, and yes issues with their integration. As someone pretty close to UAV military/commercial technology, I will say that like any emerging technology, it has to find its place... and it will, just like every other technology that has improved our lives. But for all those who harp on the inappropriate use of 'drones' and the operators whom you have been deemed to be menaces to society... I will say this. The technology will save lives, enhance our experiences, and open up opportunities for many who otherwise would never have the chance. But what UAVs won't do, as Ron White proclaims... is 'Fix Stupid'.
