It's not always so simple. You get disabled and whether you decide to sue or not can make the difference between whether you live a short and miserible life in a rooming house or in a large modern brick, range style bungalo with elevator to the basement and health care workers looking after you. There arn't many people who would do the "right thing" and choose the former.

I choose not to treat my friends as if they are the latter before they do anything to make me believe different. Sorry, I'm not that kind of person.

Oh, and I do have a sizable umbrella policy in the off chance that something bad happens.

How about drone owners not assume they have the right to invade others property/privacy with their toys.

With the argument that "you don't own the airspace" would allow a friend and I a few properties apart to install a zip line between our properties and glide over your property without any problem and take pictures. I don't think that would fly with many people.

That's probably considered a structure.

You don't own all the airspace. I thought it was determined that you do own like 500 feet high. You technically could build a zip line 510 feet high, but then you would be posing a danger to real aircrafts.

There's a gray area from 83 feet to 500 feet. Anything above 500' is considered a public highway (with rules for structures, towers, cities, towns, high population areas, etc...). That's been established by the FAA. Look up the case of The United States VS Thomas Causby for the 83' reference.

In a nutshell, the courts ruled

a landowner "owns at least as much of the space above the ground as he can occupy or use in connection with the land," and invasions of that airspace "are in the same category as invasions of the surface."

but the court never defined what that distance above the property is. That'll be coming to a court in the near future as soon as someone files a lawsuit worth the courts time to consider.

With our duck hunting dating back to the 1800s, I claim up to 500'. And those drones can look like ducks in poor lighting.

I really don't see what the huge fuss is over. Cover up your pot patch better. Around here they fly helicopters around looking for that anyway. Unless they are flying close to your house what is the big deal? If you own large tracts of land, and they aren't bothering your livestock why do you care? Why would anyone ask google earth to blur their home? The Google earth picture of the local shooting range was taken while a shoot was going on which I was at. I new everybody there and I couldn't identify anybody from the picture. I could identify most of the vehicles, but that was it.

They should ask for permission, and if asked for permission how many of you guy wouldn't let them fly over your property? I know most of you would not let someone ride an ATV on their property because of property damage and liability, but within reason do these drown guys hurt anything?
