Bad Day at Block Rock - errrr - Make it Bad Year.

A friend of mine nearly lost his life after dropping his motorcycle because a loose dog crossed his road. It happened July 8th and he's still out of work. Yes, pet owners need to control them. If they can't then they should not own them. Sent from my iPhone using TractorByNet
And if it was a raccoon or a deer? Just saying. Or should one only ride in the city (wildlife be damned)? Don't get me wrong... I wish a speedy recovery for your friend.

dragoneggs, you raise a very valid point. There are definitely more potential obstacles than just a family pet. Most folks have heard of them incidents too, because they are fairly common and especially in rural areas. Typically though, wild animals have a bit more fear of roads than do domesticated animals. If they did not there would be plenty more wild animal casualties given their population likely exceeds that of domesticated animals.

There are risks in just about every thing and humans tend to mitigate those risks with control. When a person takes ownership of something they should also accept the responsibility that comes along with ownership. Even ownership of inanimate objects requires assumption of responsibility, such as automobiles, for example. The problem with live animals is they have ability to do things on their own accord whereas a gun, auto, or whatever requires manipulation by an external force.

If we as owners do not mitigate these risks then other peoples lives and livelihood (cattle) may be in jeopardy. If we are unable to provide responsible ownership then the ownership should be relinquished.

I'll give you one more example and then step down off my box... 29 years ago my family was riding in the car with me one Sunday afternoon in a small rural village. Speed limit 25. A small dog darted into the path of my vehicle and was run over. My children felt it and knew what happened. Old enough this bothered them to tears and they still remember it, as do I. What was worse was me making the walk to the door steps of that house and telling the adult inside that a small dog was just run over. He wasn't too bothered but those two small girls were horrified. I will never forget that day.

Pet Owners be responsible.

Jeff There used to be a sign West of LA Cruces N.Mex. Saying Be careful the next 25 miles you are on (XXX) ranch. If you hit our cattle you are responsible.
Cows move slow .
Our place has a slight curve in the road and several times in a year the vehicles will jump off the black top and attack the barb wire fence . and have hit animals behind the wire.
Now who is responsible ? there is signs of vehicle leaving in same opening as it arrived.

Seems that the driver of the vehicle would be responsible since they left the road and crossed onto private property. I was once told I was driving too fast. Told the man I was not because the speed limit was such and such. He said, you were going too fast because you lost control of your vehicle. He made his point.

Think they say driving to fast for conditions. If the legal officer sees the accident or decides to finish filling his log sheet.
After the fence is down the cattle get out gets hit by a driver looking at the cell phone or finishing the last of the
big gulp so can toss the container out of vehicle. and hits a cow guess who is filing insurance claim for repairs and the legal group agrees.
This new group of adults take no responsibility for there mistakes but look for some one to blame.

Open range laws and reservation lands often favor the cow. Or I guess I should say the cattle owner. Drive through reservation or open range at your own risk.

As a matter of fact I did get pretty tired of some folks telling what & how to do things, with fences, dogs & so on. Some ides were good & some down right bad.
Worst was take the dogs back to the pound. THAT WOULD BE AS SURE DEATH WARRANT FOR THEM.
No more on that subject - OK

Currently have more serious problems that dogs getting out.

Septic tank & leach lines plugged up. Sure pumping it would have helped for a little while. Only 1 compartment can be pumped, Slab & barn floor were poured over the the leach lines & the other tank compartment. Yes that is a NO NO. but it was done long before I got here.

Started digging for a new septic tank, backed up about 3 feet from electric meter & started digging. OH crap dug through electric lines. Do they go towards the power pole or even straight out & then turn?? NO they go away from the power pole, now that is real brilliant. It was Sunday, call Co-op 2 hours later here comes a truck & 2 guys. Tell them where the lines are, I felt them being cut & backed the bucket out. They quit digging about 6 inches short of uncovering them. After about 4 hours of fiddling around they decide they didn't bring enough equipment or the right things. Call another truck out, big guy this time, I now have 2 large bucket trucks & 3 guys messing around . Another couple of hours & all is well, they spliced in new wires.

Move back a couple feet & start digging again. OH crap, hit a water line & its shooting water straight up. Turn off all places water comes into yard. No effect.
turn off all water at the well, that stopped it. It's late & I'm beat, fix it tomorrow. Go to local Ace hardware, to get a cap or plug, nope none the right size. Not another 6o mile trip for a 99 cent part. A coupling the right size, a reducer with screw threads & screw cap. Almost $7 for a .99 plug. Water line should go to the well.
Nope it goes south away from the well. Almost break it again.

Move over again & start digging, down almost deep enough. Hit some solid, Back hoe just skids across it. Its hot, I'm tired. Tomorrow is another day.

Some fun things later.
By for now.

Keep the stories coming Jim! You are a gifted story teller. I feel like I'm there with you.

Nevermind anyone who flings unsolicited advise about your world from their world. Irks me too.

Keep it coming brother!

Jim, I hate days like that. "If it wasn't for bad luck you wouldn't have any luck." Might be worth a steel rod to probe the area before you dig though. Good luck keep the stories coming.

Good to read your back.
Be careful might be old Indian burial grounds and then Gov. will fence you out of your own yard.

When working out there . a group would have to walk ahead of trencher and look for any kind of Indian sign.

if found the work stopped until soil was sifted and analyzed and lots of your taxes wasted by college hippies.
having and outing.
Maybe you have found a large rock or your septic tank

Jim gone for almost a month Vacation. health? maybe the lady at local grocery. store came by for visit?
And agree what dogs.
