This week, Ted had some the time to play in the dirt with the 96" Beast Box Blade hooked to his TL90 New Holland.

Here's the footage:

We have some pretty nasty red clay. It took him a little while with those ripper shanks to get it like that!

If I turbo my bx25d, do you think it would handle this Beastie? I have a 4 footer I am using right now with no problem. Thinking I could use it to clear my woods out from all the under growth. I know I would need to add a little weight to the front for ballast, but I think it would be doable.

MAN THAT THING IS HUGE!!!! I could fit my bx with my box blade in side and still have room to spare!!!!!

I could spend 2 days with a tiller, disc, and cultipacker and still not look that good

I watched the video in full and was surprised how long it took to get results. I did notice that Ted appeared to keep the box blade raised higher than I would have when ripping.

I would really like to see what the 120" box blade will do with a 200 hp tractor and professional operator.

I'm not. The issue is not the blade or tractor, it's that IMO the box blade is not ideal for that task.

When I have grass to remove for other things, the first thing I do is roundup... then I come in when it's brown with the tiller. A box blade tends to simply collect the clumps of grass roots/etc. and not do a good job of busting them up or incorporating them.

Then if the area is sufficiently level, the landscape rake or pulverizer finishes the job... if not, THEN I bring the box blade in.

When building a road, the idea is to NOT incorporate organic material into the mix. That's the reason you'll never see a tiller onsite during road/driveway construction. Organic can be stripped off and used for other things, like assisting quick regrowth in areas on the jobsite that need it. If you use roundup to kill the grass first...now you have "dead" soil and have to start all over again. That can be good or bad depending on the situation and what the stripped organic soil will be used for. That said, a box blade works great for general driveway construction...start to finish.

In the video, Ted doesn't do a very good job of stripping the grass off before starting construction of the road. He goes too deep and mixes the organic in while he's at it. If the plan is to mix it in, I'm in agreement with jenkinsph...with the available HP and size/weight of the box blade that Ted's using, it takes him too long to get it done. Ted does get a free pass though...He's not a professional operator. He does however do a great job of selling his products and he's darn entertaining while doing so.

Ted gets a pass.

To get the scarifiers to really work, the scarifiers must be dropped down all the way, and the top link must be shortened so that the rear blade is tipped up and out of the way so that all the weight of the box blade can force the scarifiers into the ground. The operator then feathers the height of the three point to maintain forward speed in a low gear. It is super helpful to have a hydraulic top link for tilting the the angle of attack.

With the scarifiers sunk in, try to maintain straight lines so as to not damage the scarifiers. In the following video, I'm clearing roots out in preparation for pushing back the top soil for a building pad. Oh, and I'm thirty pounds lighter now than when I made the video. :)

Not trying to pick on Ted.

My point is I have considered buying the EA 120" box blade to use with a larger tractor. Like most buyers I would want to know what to expect out of this rig. The video has left me questioning the merits of the heavy box blade.
