My wife planted a few seeds from a muskmelon pack, but this is what is coming up. Do you have any idea what this is? It almost looks like a squash, but I don't know what to do with it at harvest time.

Thanks

Very interesting. Are all the plants the same or is this one different? I understand that all cucurbits freely cross with each other if given the opportunity, so it is quite possible your wife has grown something entirely new. If she has, she should follow the convention of NOT calling it after herself. She can, of course, call it after you - but you might want to taste it first. You would not want to be remembered for an evil tasting and inedible fruit.

it looks like a melon that needs ripening....misshapen because of pollination issues.

There are two or three good growing plants with many of these things hanging on. They almost look like squash or goards of some sort. They are a little rough in feel and are not round like I have seen cantaloupe in the past. I suppose wait until the plant dies and cut one open and hope for the best.

I have never seen these.

OR WHAT??

I hope your fruits are not incubating ALIENS.

You're going to have to cut that thing open and tell us what it is now!

Another little wrinkle here. I thought she got them at Walmart or Tractor Supply so I grilled her about it.

She and I really liked the cantaloupe from last year so she took the seeds from them and dried them. She planted those seeds, she tells me. Last year the cantaloupe were perfectly round and looked like the ones you see in a grocery store.
I don't know what to think other than maybe jeff9366 is right. I guess time will tell.
