Around 80F today & sunny. Should be a decent breeze picking up a bit later too.

I have to lay a scent trail this morning for Sira and then get to work on the rocks.

Hope everyone enjoys a long weekend.

I got stuck reading this and thought about it for a while. I just think it's pretty cool to be leaving a scent trail for a dog.

Happy 4th of July, all!!

53 right now, high of 76 and overcast today...but at least, no rain!

Got the lawn mowed and trimmed yesterday...grill is assembled and we bought a couple steaks and dogs. I didn't mow the field since my neighbors have company using their camp site on their part of the field...so that will be Sunday's chore. There's a lot of dust and pollen kicked up when I mow the field, I don't want to ruin their good times.
I've got to pressure wash a chair and repair a spout today and a few other odds and ends.

Over here in the UK the population is 64 million people and ever rising. The whole of the UK only stretches to 80,802 square miles, so we have 792 people to every square mile.

Eric, here in Lee county Texas (634 square miles) we are at 26 people per square mile and the population is growing very slowly as retirees come and die and the school kids graduate and leave for the big cities.
We are 125 miles from Houston and 60 miles from Austin and only a few want to make that long drive drive every day for work. Cattle and hay fields dominate the countryside with a few corn fields nowadays.

Most people in this county, including my Great Grandparents, immigrated from Germany in the late 1800s.

77˚ the clouds will keep the temp to the 90s. Happy happy happy fourth!
All pets accounted for, the coyotes must have found some wildlife to munch on last night.

thought the same thing then looked at my dog and laughed  He would watch me go and then when I was out of site, he would find some shade and take a nap. Don't think he would miss me till dinner time. But his job is holding down the floor and he does it very well.

79 going to 98 and I will be packing today to get ready to leave tomorrow. Will send pictures if I can figure out how with the tablet. Thanks Farmer, you be careful too!!! Lot of idiots on the hi-way this weekend

Happy 4th everyone

Happy July 4th!

Those cheeky Brits. The Brits I worked with at the NATO site jokingly (only half) called our Independence Day "Good Riddance Day." :D As far as I know my family came from British stock. A cousin tried searching our family genealogy but could never nail down the earliest immigrant. A Swede once asked me about my origins and when I said British he decided that a Viking had had his way with one of my ancestors. I could see that as a possibility. Sharon's background is half Scots and half German.

Going to do some grilling later today.

Happy 4th everyone

Sharon said Sira got a bit confused yesterday while following my trail because at one point she could see me out in the field. (I walk the scent trail and then go off and do other stuff, I'm not at the end of the trail.) For training purposes the dog should follow the trail to earn the treat, not find the person. That's an association you don't want them make while training or they will think that finding a specific person is the main idea.

She needs practice following a stranger's scent trail so she doesn't start to associate the game with finding me. There is another tracking gathering this Sunday, so Sira will get some practice with strangers there.

Sira is the most energetic Leonberger we've had. A dog's natural energy level and desire to play games has a lot to do with how well they will participate in an activity--as opposed to holding down the porch. I bet your dog could find you if it wanted to.

Labs and Border Collies are good examples of high energy level dogs that can go on like the Energizer Bunny. My brother had a Lab K9 drug dog for several years when he was a LEO. That dog would wear your arm out retrieving a Frisbee. It loved to play and finding drugs was just another game to it. I think eventually as dogs get older they lose the desire and the energy to play constantly. IIRC his drug dog was retired at around 8 years old.
