I would also recommend a downforce kit for the 3 point hitch model.

I used a standard PHD to drill all the holes for quite a large fence a while ago. It didn't have down force and was a pain in the butt in my soil conditions.

Because of that, I bought a Landpride HD25 hydraulic auger to use on my FEL so I could have down force.

I also wanted to be able to back the auger out by reversing direction, which I really like and have used on more than one occasion.

Ultimately I believe the "best" setup is a hydraulic PHD hooked up to the 3 point hitch with a down pressure kit.

I am wanting to convert my 3 point post hole digger to use on my 420 loader on my
4200 deere. I was wandering what hydraulic motor I needed.

You want something like the Worksaver 714H. I have installed that unit on a JD 955, but on the
backhoe, not the loader. Worked great. Having better control, down-force, and reversing
make this approach SO much nicer than a PTO PHD.

I have also built one from components, copying the 714H fairly closely.

If you are designing from scratch, you can go with direct-drive, or gearbox drive, like
the 714H uses. Direct-drive is simpler, but the drive unit is longer which limits
clearance, and a BIG hyd motor will be needed to slow the speed down. About 20
cubic inches! $$$$!

If you use an angle gearbox, then you have more clearance, you get more
torque, and you can buy only a 7ci motor. The 714H (and my PHD) uses
a 3.18-to-one gearbox which triples the torque.

BTW, a 12" auger bit is huge: I hope your soil is soft.

Yes sir, that is what I was planning on doing, building from scratch and putting on my loader. Lot of things to consider here. I have been using it on the three point quit a bit. With all the rain we are getting this year, it may not wind up being a issue! Thanks LUTT
