Broke shaft from transmission

The shaft that connects to the drive shaft where the fan is mounted on broke off today. Hope I'm not confusing anyone. Here's a picture

Wondering how much this will cost me and how big a job it really is!!!

Tractor is 2305 with 1100hrs

The shaft that broke is $200, then add seals and other things plus most likely 5-6 hours labor, I could see $800-1000 before it was all said and done.

not really..I was pulling a lawn roller full of cement and was going to put it away, went over a small pile of snow and that's where it broke off..I did notice that both u-joints on the drive shaft are shot!!

Will need to add more to the fix if the u-joints are shot. Something unusual happening to cause that much damage, IMO.

went to dealer and they never saw that...as that shaft does not get any added torque,it's mainly running free.

all they could conclude would be bad joints causing vibration.Just hoping my shaft didn't get any bend in it as it was hitting the underneath of the tractor, 'cause a new shaft is close to $900

If this is the shaft that connects from the engine to the rear end or to the front of the rear end that the hydrostatic unit drives off of then I would find a different dealer. If the driveshafts to the rear end is the one that broke it gets torqued just like the shaft in a geared machine maybe not quite as bad but it still drives the tractor. If it didn't torque the shaft you would never get the engine horsepower to the ground. Every time you use the hydraulics and the engine starts working that shaft os getting torqued.
Maybe I'm way off but I don't know how they get the torque the engine is rated if that shaft just free spins. But I don't have one of those tractors so I don't know which shaft it is if there are multiple drive shafts or not. If I am thinking of the right one that shaft was probably vibrating and it may of hurt much more than you know as of now.

Certainly gets torque, but maybe not "added" torque.
And certainly isn't "running free", or the tractor would function ok without the shaft at all... as I see it.

Pretty standard response from a dealer.. "Never saw that before". And we know it isn't true, or he/she is pretty wet yet behind the ears.

Failing U-joints caused vibrations that flexed the input shaft until it fatigued and failed. New u-joints many hours ago when they started to fail would have been cheaper.

Very likely ^^^

I would add that you need to grease this shaft just like any other driveline and from threads I have read one of the zerks is a little inconvenient to get to.

yup....they are a pain to get to...The front joint is the bigger pain as there is a solid plate connecting both sides of the frame...Kinda need to take the shaft off to grease the sob!!

I think regardless of the brand,all the driveshafts are a royal pain to grease.On my Kubota GR which has 3 shafts,there are no zerks on the joints.The manual says to squirt oil on them which seems rather odd to me.

First I hear of that!!! what is the oil gonna do? just spin around and splatter all around?
