I have been through there several times going up US11 before I59.
Hwy 11 is within a few miles of my home. I can't imagine that being the main road. Traffic is horrible from Montgomery to Chattanooga using the interstate. When I-59 came through everything move to the exits on it. Downtown almost disappeared, but it is making a comeback.

The first time I was coming down US11 from Chattanooga before getting to Ft. Payne in 1969, it was about 0230 and we were the only ones on the road until this older Ford zip around us like we were sitting still. Then a minute later here came a new 1969 black sedan chasing him. The wife comely said a runner was being chased by revenuers, since a lot of Alabama was dry back then.
