I think you are referring to an engine know as the "Sterling Engine", it had External combustion. AS the piston (S) went down they sucked in hot air, it cooled & pulled the pistons back up. Don't think it ever move up to a little more than a toy engine, with no practical uses.
The ignition system that I am asking about is used on both 2 cycle & 4 cycle internal combustion engines.

Stirling engines were used in IRRC mining to pump water out of mines. They were HUGE.
