How ya'll down south dealing with the cold snap?

Its been a long one up my way, frost line is down over 36", and many have broken pipes, even towns are in state of emergency due to frozen pipes, and we are somewhat accustom to it..

Not sure if ya'll have winter blend diesel, checked your antifreeze or anything like that... Just curious how ya'll are making out with the cold, not the snow... I know what that's like down south.

it was 28 last night, 28 right now with a light sheen of ice from frozen drizzle. We have an au pair from Colombia, never seen snow, we drove 50 miles north to Waco to chase down a light dusting of snow so she could see it. Made her happy, she got cold hands and a snowball down her neck...fun times!!

It hasn't been below 25 so far this year where I am. This is likely the last really cold front. Some of the trees are beginning to bloom, a few buds on some trees. It has dropped below 32 about 5 times this year, in 40s or above next day, so not bad at all.

All my vehicles are set up with coolant down to zero degrees. I didn't even check anything this year. Leave faucets dripping at night if freeze predicted.

Can't say I sent all the snow from here up north, but am sure that some gulf moisture has caused some of the problems in Yankee land!! It just happens...

Wow! How did you know that a cold front/snap was coming through Tassie today?

It's the last official day of summer today too. I'm expecting about 1mm of rain this evening and the current temp is 22.6C, down from a high of 25C. The Liars (meteorologists) reckon a low tonight of 14C.

I come from northern Vermont, I've land near Morrisville. Temps were down to 29 below last week,
I'm retiring to northeast Mississippi, the average high/low for today is 61/39, only about 60 degrees F difference.

Not sure if we even have a "frost line". /edit - in Mississippi that is.

Got down to 17 degrees this morning which was over three times warmer than about a week ago. Have had two weeks with cold and three snow storms. Schools have been out most of the last two weeks. Main roads have been in good shape so that's not been a problem for more than a few hours to overnight. The tractor and FEL has made clearing the driveway relatively easy although I will have some work to do to put some gravel back in place. Most of the gravel that got pushed up with the snow is piled in other parts of the driveway some will have to be raked out of the grass.

The problem is the ground is saturated when it hasn't been frozen so chances to get out to do anything on the farm have been few for about a month. So it has been good that I have several dry cords of firewood in the woodshed.

Went to the boat show yesterday to look around just to get out of the house. It was disappointing but it was good to get out and move around some.

I think we have gone down into single digit temps 4-5 times this year. It is very unusual to hit a single digit low even once a winter.

Some city mains froze and broke and I am sure water lines froze in people's houses. Last winter in one of the single digit days, a coworker's neighbor had the pipes freeze. Took 2-3 months to fix the damage and the family had to move into a hotel while the work was done.

Snowfall wise it has not been too bad. However, over the last two weeks we have had four storms that have kept the kids out of school for 8 out of 10 days. The first three storms were minor snow/ice events that dropped just enough frozen stuff to make the road impassable. We dodged one storm because it was mostly sleet, seems like we had about two inches of sleet with a bit of snow. If that sleet had been freezing rain, I think the region would have been without power for a couple of weeks. The last snow event this week was 4-6 inches in my area. I have to move some firewood to the house today and it is going to be a messy, mushy, wet exercise. :shocked: We still have snow on the ground so moving the wheel barrow will be through snow and I suspect mud and water.

Hopefully, this is the last of Winter 2015. :laughing::laughing::laughing:

winter around here seems to run from Nov to Mar....well...it's Mar and I am so ready for it to be over! I grew up in Iowa -- been in Texas since 81...never plan to leave -- you can keep all that snow & cold north of the Red river.

Watch ya'll blooms if they're flowering, if ya can help it and its not too big a job... Fruits can take a real beating and hammer any fall crops... I try to cover what I can when we get late frost... which is after May 16th in my area.. Heavy blankets, sheets and plastic tarps won't work for what its worth...

Sunny here, and 19 degrees, 4 or so inches on the way, had measurable snow on the ground since first week of the year... ready for it to be over..

Turkeys are taking a beating this year from what I have heard due to the snow pack..

The cold isn't too bad. However, the snow, 10 inches last week, makes for a hard time trying to feed the cattle. Fortunately, I did lay in extra hay this year. I guess the wooly caterpillars were right.

We have been in the teens a couple times this winter .. No single digits

Lifes normal down here when the summer heat is on, hotter the better.

We broke a record here for 10 days of below 0 in February that was set in 1855.

LOTS of records being broken in Ohio for sure, all of then for well below normal records. We are also coming up for most consecutive days of snow on ground too, think we are in 4th or 5th place as of this weekend (1944, 77, 78, 2013 then 2014.) Highest level of Ice on Great Lakes for time of year as well... Was -11 last night & calling for 10" of snow tomorrow but warmer !!!

Agree a million percent with you. It sucks big time.

I moved back to my home town and am remodeling a house currently that I'm buying and don't have running water as of yet. I've been carrying water for drinking and flushing the toilet.

Well I had a 5 gallon water jug like the one in the below picture. I had it full of water and forgot to bring it in last night. Well the darn thing froze and broke the bottom out as well as broke the sides in half.



At least I still have a few more of those jugs with the water. Can't flush the toilet anyway as the darn toilet is frozen right now as there is no heat in the bathroom area. Well there's no heat in any other part of the house except the bedroom I'm staying in.

I hate using that toilet though as it's freezing in that bathroom. lol And it don't help that near the toilet is a hole in the floor with cold air blowing up through those holes. xd Makes it that much colder.

I just wish this darn cold weather would be gone as well as the snow we got.

Been going to my parents house a few blocks down the road to shower. They have good heat. Well they wouldn't if they hadn't bought the newer mobile home they're currently living in.

The 30 year old furnace in the 30 year old mobile home they were previously living in went out on them.

My dad woke up freezing that morning. Couldn't get the furnace started. They were in the process of moving to the new place anyway. They just had to move out of the old place sooner.

The roads were getting bad and dad didn't know if they would be able to make it the 11 miles to their new place. Luckily they did as they probably would've froze to death in that house.
