I was married befor to, and she was sa good as myself in spending money. But I have an excuse. She was a 45-24-35. She left me for an Indian Guru. But, if I want to be mean, he has less fun, because she is 66 now and there is this gravity law.

Pending the audit of the replies which they will get to as soon as they finish with the IRS emails and the Federal reserve's books I suggest we get back to what makes for a secure retirement. I propose that you need both luck to have the opportunities,and perseverance to stick with it in the face of what appear to be better options during the long years you have to muddle through to meet the requirements and last but not least a very good wife that works with you to get to the goal. Take anyone of those away and your just working paycheck to paycheck or a homeless man on a steam vent.

I guess that's how I see it: You need to plan, and stick to the plan, but life happens, and makes decisions for you. I think the simplest thing is LBYM, Living Below Your Means. Folks that I know that have had problems usually did not have any reserves, a little bad luck derails everything. One guy I know went thru 4 divorces, but was able to retire anyway. He always lived within his means, and after the 1st divorce, protected himself legally. It helped that none of the last 3 unions lasted very long. He remarried again, about 15 years ago, and is still married. I guess he likes being married!!! But he still saves and invests, although he is in his 70's. It's a habit for him, a lifestyle.

It should be clear to anybody that if your relationships are not secure you are very unlikely to be financially secure.!

Late to the party, but when I started working after college, my dad and his buddies all told me over some celebratory beers to plow money into the 401k plan that had a 6% company match..At age 23, I did and continued for the last 25 years. Never borrowed from it, never stopped contributing even when my daughter was born 3 months premature, the wife had a post partum stroke and we were dirt broke for years after that. I restored cars until we got out of the financial rut. All are healthy if anyone cares.

Some luck and a lot of discipline I guess. Given the direction of the thread now, 22+ years married..

When in high school, the conventional wisdom was that all you needed was

a good horse
a good dog
a good gun
a good knife

I suppose this thread would argue that years of wisdom add

good parents
good education
good health
good decisions
good wife
good job(s)
good habits
good luck

And, with a nod to technology, I would add

good tractor with good attachments
good computer

And, we all need good land, water and air.

Glade to hear that all worked out for you. It would be small consolation to have a pot of money but lost a loved one too early.

Well yeah without some good land your tractor isn't much use. All the rest of your list as well except maybe for the computer. They are nice but not as necessary as people think today.

Me too!!! Daughter was 1lb 3oz..So you know where I'm coming from...

My point is that discipline is absolutely necessary. I have a fair amount of retirement money and a fair amount of liquidity and private investments...

Not quite a 7 figure guy yet, but doing the turtle thing as opposed to the hare as it goes.
