Any coyote hunters

I can't put anything out in that field unfortunately and it's actually my back yard. Daughter has 5 horses in there and it's all open to them. I go out there squawking they run right over. I heard their party last summer again right next door. I had just come in from sitting in the back further and upwind of them. I dashed over a small rise on the field where I knew they'd pop through the 15' hedgerow of trees. Just a couple hasty squawks from the tape call and they were on their way. I was all ready and they were full run by the barks getting closer it was perfect. Then just as I was anticipating something busting out in the open the ground starts shaking. It grows to a rumble and I look behind to see the damned horses roar up in a line behind me like the guardians of the galaxy. Of course yotes weren't coming near that. I was screwed again by those idiots. :hissyfit: That's not the first time either. I can section them in to one part of the field but IO bet when they start hopping and bellowing it will still chase those yotes off. Yotes are terrified of even one horse and they all get mean when they happen to see one.
Anyways that's why I can't use the field with them loose out there. About all I have left is a 150' wide lane that I cut out of the brush. It extends about 300 yards off to a swamp . Evergreens right out to the edges on all sides . It makes knowing whats coming next to impossible till they are right there. That and the fact they always start their chorus just at full dark I why all I can use is a 12 gauge. All the rest of my back property is heavily evergreen covered as well. I probably should just break down and buy a game cam and see just what roams by out there at what hours. Seldom do I ever hear anything coyote during daylight and I have been here 20 years.

Drizler, on my place I go out well before daylight in a ghillie suit to a place which is also concealed and just wait for the sun to come up. The coyotes come thru within an hour and a half after sun up. I sometimes put out bait...old meat, scraps, etc...for several days so they begin to expect an easy meal. Perhaps you could set up on the lane you have and entice them out of the brush with some bait. Keep the wind "right" This approach avoids squawks/horses but might bring the coyotes out in the open allowing a shot.

good luck.

Drizler, If you're going to buy a trail camera, look at the Browning Strike Force. I have 2 and they blow away any I have had, even more expensive ones. Check the link below, great test and recommendation on it.

TrailCamPro - Game and Trail Cameras - Shop Camera, Reviews, Guides

These are the ones I have, battery life is incredible so far.
Browning Strike Force Review
Looking at the specs this camera has a trigger speed of .75 second.I have a Stealth Cam and it's trigger speed is .5 sec. which I find slow for videos. I just use mine for coyotes and such around the property and it's pretty common to get just the back end of an animal and then if there is more following him I'll get them, one time I had 10 sec of nothing then 2 pairs one after the other. Obviously something triggered it but was gone in the .5 sec before recording. I've also had a dog go through the area and be missed entirely so I'm sure I've missed some stuff I'd like to see.
If you use your's for video have you noticed this? I'm just wondering if the trigger time is correct as claimed. I would think .5 sec is pretty quick but I know I'm missing a lot of action.

Jim, I have never used the video function on any camera. I set it for single high res shots. I get birds in flight, not always clear, but..They are landing pretty quick. Seem the closer the animal, the quicker they can "trot" through the filed of view, I miss a few when they are real close, if they are in a rush. Not sure if the photo and vid speeds are the same?

Thanks,I was just curious, I think you are right that single photos work better but the videos are fun.Sometimes the coyotes are spooked and sometimes they are curious.Videos are pretty hard on batteries though.

I recommend the plot watcher pro. It uses only time lapse photography. For most of us, what happens at night is quite irrelevant. The battery life is great due to not having to power the IR detection system that you have on regular game cams and it also does not power a flash. I have had a few moultrie game cams and their batteries never made it through a week in winter conditions.

Plot watcher has good reviews too iirc, I just don't like the panoramic photos I have seen, but still almost bought one.

I like knowing what is there in dark, as much or more than daytime photos. Some animals come from far enough, that it's dark by the time they get there, or some mostly move at night. I have a pair of coyotes, 3-4 grey fox and one occasional bobcat coming in around midnight to 3am, if was wanting to try calling them at night, I have a good idea when to be on stand. I just don't hate them enough now that I am older, not enough to get out of bed at 1am:D

Just a word for those just starting out, make sure your coyote is a coyote. My neighbor killed our black and white border collie shooting eyes that came to his calls one night. I won't tell you he is a hunter, he does not deserve that title..

That is a good note to point out. Here we have leash laws in allot of counties, so the dogs owner carries the responsibility for allowing them to run unsupervised.
