Must remove the hitch?

/ Must remove the hitch? #301
So we have proved it is not a Ontario law , it might be a safety infraction if it is part of bumper (which most truck receivers are not) and has broken sharp edges.........whooppe do ........... and no examples of EVER being enforced.

I imagine there is some safety regulations and laws on the books from the 1800's too,I just googled some ... I hear there is an obscure law in Oklahoma where It Is Illegal To Have A sleeping Donkey In Your Bathtub After 7pm ..........
in Ohio Oxford, It is unlawful for a woman to appear in public while unshaven. This includes legs and face.

Debating the hitch in or out is the equivalent of debating whether a women should shave her legs........its her choice.

:laughing:

PS and we once again have Tim making it personal and calling us lazy........... time to close this thread when folks like Tim want to insult 50% of the readers at TBN

From Ontario Highway Traffic Act R.R.O. 1990, REGULATION 611

SAFETY INSPECTIONS
BODY WORK

1. (1) The body, sheet metal and equipment shall be inspected and tested for conditions hazardous to occupants, pedestrians or vehicles and,
(a) no bumper, fender or mudguard shall have been removed;
(b) each bumper shall be securely mounted;
(c) each mud flap, where applicable, shall be in position;
(d) no bumper, fender, molding or other part shall have a broken, bent or sharp edge that protrudes in such a way as to constitute a hazard to persons or vehicles;

Depending upon the government official conducting the inspection, a receiver hitch could be interpreted to violate this section of the Safety Inspection regulations.

Also, threads drift from the original subject all the time.

by my read, as long as it is not a bumper, fender or moulding, it is an other part.. adn as long as that other part does not have a sharp edge, or is broken or bent.. then it's ok?

I agree with you, Chris. But then, vague regulations give the regulators lots of discretion/power over the regulated. :)

Since the thread has now deviated into regulations like mirrors and damaged body work that have nothing to do with hitches ……...here is one more obscure regulation found on google…
In Indianapolis, Indiana "No horse shall be driven or ridden on any street in the city at a speed in excess of ten (10) miles per hour. "
I wonder if the horse’s tail is allowed protrude beyond the length of its body if the horse does not need it consistently, and imagine those that would walk behind the horse and not see its *****. 
But then some states and cities are deciding to make laws to force horses to wear diapers…I wonder if those city folks are the same type as those that worry about hitches and not watching where they walk ? ;)

Well it wasn't active for four days until you just brought it back. Lol

I've always wondered why threads are closed. I don't understand the reasoning. No one is forced to read a particular thread and there is an unsubscribe option. If people want to be difficult, ridiculous, or humorous let them go at it.

The only threads that get closed on this site are the ones that are too argumentative, rude, etc and where people keep going back to the same rude/argumentative posts even after the moderators prune the threads.

As a general rule, threads don't get closed around here.

If threads are closed every time no one has posted useful info for a few days, then if someone finds the thread later and wants to add something relevant they can't. The policy as it stands sounds appropriate to me. Overly moderated forums bug me. This place strikes a nice balance.

I have followed this thread from the beginning and have to relate my story. For 30 years I have volunteered at the local hospital aide fund raiser. This year for the first time we did not have the benefit of a 20 ft trailer to move goods from the collection barn to the fair field and resorted to pickup trucks, also volunteered. We have three massive barn loads of donated goods to move in two days. Imagine one huge yard sale. I was loading a truck and as it filled up the tailgate was closed and my focus was on where to pack the next box into the truck, not looking for a trailer hitch. At almost a run, I ran into the hitch. I continued loading for the rest of that day as well as the next as there were no others to take over my position. The knot on my leg grew to baseball size as the entire leg increased in size as well. For the next week things seemed to be getting worse, not better. I finally decided I needed to see a doctor as my foot filled with what appeared to be blood under the skin, and the pain shooting up my leg every morning when I first got up brought me to tears. Alter a Dr's visit, an X Ray, ultrasound, visit to the second Dr., several hundred dollars, and eight weeks things returned to normal. If you drive the truck to work five days a week and only tow on weekends do you really need the hitch in all the time? As I get older I've discovered I don't heal a quickly as I used to.

Just like on other forums i hang out at, there are always some folks, that decide all on their own that this or that thread should be closed, simply because they have no more to add or gain from any given thread, in which case they can simply avoid it. NOT?
Back to draw bars: Not really sure about the law here in Ontario, but i don't know anyone and haven't heard of anyone being ticketed for leaving it in.
If i know I'll be towing in a day or two, it stays in. Otherwise it gets removed

Similar around here. In the farm truck it comes out if we won't be towing that week (usually it comes right out). In the wifes Yukon, or my car it comes right out unless we will be towing that day to save on our shins.

Absolutely the same here...Why is this concept is an argument is beyond me.

When I worked for a landscaping company, we towed pretty much every day and the hitches stayed in, but for our vehicles, the risk of banging a shin (or of one of the kids going headfirst into a hitch) is greater than annoyance of installing and removing the hitch. Also, the farm truck has a slightly rusty receiver and if you leave a ball mount in there for any length of time, it takes a sledgehammer to get it out.
If its your truck, do what you want...

In last Sundays news paper business section. the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. Has article on a new trailer hitch that extends in a 18 inch arc to reach toward a trailer hitch.
It is a class 111 handle a load up to 6000 pounds
Reel-Quik Hitch website hitchrific.com
This should be a good hitch for those who cannot stand for others to have something they don't have extending from rear of pick-up.

Walk to close to a cattle trailer and get cow poop attached to your jeans.
lesson is taught in a hurry.
