Not making excuses for them but if they've been on the road for awhile it doesn't seem as dark to them as it does to you if you're just getting on the road. Anymore mine come on automatically.

Stop flashing your lights at me - it distracts me from texting!

Drive with your brights on. They'll get mad and turn theirs on in retaliation :)

I have the same pet peeve. We have a law now that if wipers are required, then so are lights. But it does not seem to have much difference.

Always amazes me, near dusk on a snowy nasty day and there are many people driving grey cars with no headlights on...

Here in Canada, DRLs are mandatory, but many drivers don't realize this doesn't turn on the rear lights also. With many newer cars having digital dash instruments, the dash is always lit. I often see cars on the roads at night with no rear lights, but the dash is lit and headlights are kinda dim.
I guess the drivers are oblivious to the fact that they haven't turned on the full lighting system, and have no rear lights on.
Maybe it's time to mandate fully automatic lighting ???

My 1997 Volvo has that, if the DRL switch is on, or if you leave the headlights in on position the lights come on when you start the car and turn off when the car turns off.

yup, my old '86 Camry had that too... the lights went off when you took out the key, and opened the drivers door, in that order.
I recall one day getting home to find a visitor parked in our two-car driveway, sort of in the middle. I pulled in a bit too close to open my door, so hopped across & got out the passenger door (no easy feat 'cause I'm over 6 ft tall). Needless to say, since I didn't open the drivers door, the lights didn't go out, & I ended up with a dead battery.

Okay maybe I am getting old but the lights on when the car is running does not seem like to bad of idea. From gray day in Ohio.

Most of the people on the roads today never had any driver education classes. Clueless re defensive driving.

We had a drivers ED class and "behind the wheel" drivers ED in high school. What pisses me off, to this day, is that they never once mentioned that the left lane is for passing.

Well, that would explain why several cars will pile up behind a slow one with no intention of passing, or leaving room for those who do know what the left lane is for and would like to use it. :D

I have always thought a good place to teach the people you described how to drive would be on the German Autobahn.

Driving in Poland was refreshing!
On two lane asphalt, drivers actually pass instead of tailgating for miles.
On multi-lane roads the left lane is only for those moving faster than the cars behind it.

I have always thought a good place to teach the people you described how to drive would be on the German Autobahn.

I was referring to two lane secondary roads where cars close up in a tight line behind a slow vehicle. It's impossible to pass the whole line safely unless you are driving a Porsche. The people at the head of that line have no intention of passing but there they sit 10' off the bumper of the vehicle in front of them. But yeah, some Autobahn exposure and a few tickets for driving like an idiot would certainly help.

I've often thought that penalizing the poor and clueless drivers would go a long ways to reducing road rage and accidents. In dense traffic you can watch one driver mess it up for 30-40 others. Then they get frustrated, start jockeying to pass on the right, pull tight squeezes with or without their plastic Jesus :), etc.

Less focus on speeding and more on proper use of the road is needed IMO. Besides that, those drivers cost everyone road dollars trying to accommodate their inefficient ways. It could well be that a 3-lane road would replace a 4-lane road if only it were used properly.

If you want to see people driving efficiently google "don't drive here port au prince" They can put way more people on a piece of road than north americans. :)
