35K? Think again.

Anyone that drills that hole in their intercooler can expect a dime>quarter sized oil spot on the garage floor at night.

This was their quote for the things that put the Ram on top. "The Ram's combination of exclusive features, towing and hauling abilities, driving experience, and unimpeachable fuel economy put it on top."

This confuses me because they selected the least capable configuration for the 2.7 ecoboost with the 3:55 axle yet is still smoked the Ram in the towing performance test. As far as the hauling aspect, they overloaded the Rams 960 lb payload with their payload test of 1000 lbs unless the test driver weighed negative 40 lbs. The Ram did have better MPG but used more energy (KWH) and had the most CO2 emissions with a higher cost per mile once you consider higher fuel cost. I do not dispute the Ram takes the nod on features and driving experience but it is very handicapped in capability which they touted.

I caught the same thing.

Kinda ridiculous you have to modify a $35k truck to work like it should. Why did Ford not correct this? Or did they? Hope this does not go the way of the 6.0 diesel- make all these expensive changes then the engine is "bullet proof". I owned 2 6.0, they were trouble free but unloaded both before 100k miles.

Like I said in an earlier post, mine has stumbled once in 3 years of driving it. Taking 90 seconds and drilling a single 1/16 hole to make it "bullet proof" seems a far cry from expensive changes. I pulled my lower supply hose today to see if I had anything resting in my lower intercooler and found about 3 droplets of water. I haven't decided to drill the hole since it has only happened once where I had reduced power for 5 seconds.

I would definitely choose this power train again today if buying a new truck. Definitely not scared of it like you were with your 6.0 diesel.

How can the same issue apply to the 5.0 Coyote. It's not a DI engine.

I believe it is a good powertrain, but the fact you still have to modify a 35k dollar truck in your garage is ridiculous to me. Again, has Ford offered a fix? Happy yours has been relatively trouble free. Hopefully it lasts a long time.

They have a tsb that is supposed to fix the issue but it involves a restrictor plate and a computer flash. I would rather just drill a hole than restrict the efficiency of the intercooler. Weep holes are common for some manufacturers. I am not sure if ford doesn't add one for environmental issues or what the reasoning is.

"had one instance of a shudder in 3 years and it was after towing 7 hours in continuous rain.".

Seems like an incidental issue to me.

It was perfect conditions that day. I was towing on the interstate at about 70 mph for hours in nonstop rain. Boost gage indicated approximately 6 lbs of continuous boost because I was towing a loaded trailer. Towed similar distances without issue but atmospheric conditions were always different.

We have 4 Ecoboost trucks now. Me, my father, BIL, and uncle. Mine has 47,000 miles, my uncles has 40,000 miles, and my father and BIL are both under 10,000 miles. Not a single hiccup from any of them and none of us plan on a single modification.

About 70% of the F150 trucks sold since 2011 are Ecoboost. F150's are the best selling vehicle in the world. If there were major issues it would be big news. Right now it's Internet lore.

Ok thanks for clarifying. I know a few people with the EB engine and so far trouble free.
